Man in photograph has been incorrectly identified as Frederick John Barton. Francis Adam Barton was the son of Thomas John Barton. Thomas John Barton was born in 1836 in Gloucestershire and after his father died in 1850 arrived in Melbourne in 1852 along with his mother, adult sisters, younger brothers, his uncle, his uncle's wife Suzanna and their family. Thomas tried gold mining at Woods Point but found it too difficult. He then partnered with Ewen Hugh Cameron to provide the miners with meat. In 1864 they purchased a plot of land in Marysville and set up a butchers/abattoirs and from there began their business of taking supplies to the miners at the nearby Woods Point and Jamieson goldfields. In 1865 the business was firmly established and Thomas married Selina Croker at Heidelberg and brought her back to Marysville. Their first home was 'The Chestnuts', which included the store, and was situated on the town side next to the Steavenson River. Sadly, in 1876 Selina died of complications after giving birth to their sixth child. Thomas was in need of a nanny to care for his six children, including the newborn baby, and so he employed Emily Ada Sparke, who is the eldest daughter of the local school teacher. Thomas and Emily subsequently marry in 1878 and they go on to have a further 10 children over the next several years. Thomas assisted in the establishment of the first school in Marysville in 1870 and remained a very active member of the community including as a Councillor for the Shire of Healesville, Shire President and he was also appointed as a Justice of the Peace. Thomas died in Carlton in 1911. After their father's death, his sons Fred and Frank took over the family business, which was then known as Barton Bros Store which continued to operate until sometime in the 1970's.Mr F.J. As theses shoes are from Turkey and from the period of the early 1900s they may have been bought back from that country as a souvenir after WWI. Members of the Barton family went to WWI . Manufacture of slippers circa 1920s and represents early Turkish style .These slippers are considered rare due to the intricate workmanship in leather. They have historical and good Provence significance due to being donated by a local man who possibly bought them back from WWI . Two brown slippers, left and right foot. Leather soles and gold patterned (circle and fish like) embroidered uppers. A long, 13cm leather strip upward curled, extension fastened at tip of sole. Back of heel extended to a pointPatterned front toe,side arch and heel. Markings may represent water ,four fish and fish traps

The letter confirms the points made at a meeting between Mr Barton City of Bendigo and the Bendigo RSL regarding the Restoration of the Bendigo Cenotaph. It outlines the following points; 1. Materials to be used. 2. Faults. 3. location. 4. Restoration. 5. Time of construction. 6. Work progress. 7. Chemical preservation. The foolscap page supplied to Council by the RSL outlines the timeline of the Cenotaph coming into being from Wednesday 6th May 1953 the first meeting to the 2nd of June 1957 when Sir George Lansell officially gave the Cenotaph to the Citizens of Bendigo.Document 3 pages stapled together. Surveyors report 1986 regarding the restoration of the Bendigo Cenotaph continued on from Cat No 8255. The document starts with a report to a Council meeting held on August 18th 1986. This is a more detailed report of the first by Dr. A.H. Spry (AMDEL) followed by Mr W. Barton City Engineers Department. The state of the Cenotaph was also compounded by it's situation re the Bendigo Creek. Main points where. The Cenotaph is sited on the Bridge over the Creek not alongside it as was supposed. The Cenotaph concrete foundation was resting on the old timber decking which is in an advanced state of decay among 5 main points. Report goes on with points. Conclusion; "It would of course be necessary to demolish the Cenotaph to carry out this work". Estimate of costs in brief. 1. Bridge repairs $72,000.00. 2. Cenotaph repairs. - Demolish & rebuild $110,000.00. Options - There are only two options (as per estimate) or demolish and relocate to another location under 3 sections (a) (b) (c). Henry James (1860-1932) was an agent and auctioneer. Record secretary of the Snowy River Shipping company. Shire councillor. Foundation member of Butter Factory.Henry James was a prominent Orbost identity who was very much involved in the local community.Invitation to James, H. (Mr) to the opening of Federal Parliament by the Prime Minister Edmund Bartonon 9 May 1901. Framed in wood, white paper with print of the young queen on a horse holding court. Colour invitations shows a young woman with armour and sword dismounting from a white horse in front of an older woman who has a crown in front of her. Several other women look on. The room is hung with heraldic bunting and shields, including one of the Union Jack and one showing the Southern Cross. Connolly and Tatchell have asked me to write you in reference to the insurance of your butcher shop in the joint names of Mr. Kelly and yourself.
