The photograph appears to have been taken from the rear of what was then the Grenville Shire Offices. It shows a number of houses, including houses owned by Mrs Bobby Nicol and the Ching family (in York Street, on opposite sides of Clyde Street), and a house owned at that time by the Forestry Commission (on the corner of Clyde and Adair Streets). A postcard in a series produced by the Rose Stereograph Company in Victoria, Australia as a souvenir of Marysville.A black and white photograph of the view of the surrounding hills from Nichol's Lookout which is on the Marysville-Wood's Point road near Marysville in Victoria. The Marysville-Woods Point Road was originally part of the Yarra Track, constructed in the early 1860s to provide access between Healesville and the Woods Point Goldfields. Despite the steep terrain and engineering difficulties, the Yarra Track soon became a busy route used by pack horses, horse-drawn drays, and wagons. The ball was held in the Parish Hall in October 1947. This was the first debutante ball held in Linton after the end of World War II. Organisers were Mrs H. D. This photograph was taken on the first 'Australia Day', held 30 July 1915. Across Australia, this day was set aside for a nation-wide fundraising effort for the Patriotic Relief Fund, raising money to assist wounded soldiers returning to Australia during WWI. Other days had been set aside to raise funds for specific nations, e.g. 'Belgian Day' had been held earlier in 1915.. In Linton Australia Day 1915 was celebrated with a jumble sale, raffles, and collection of donations. There was also a stall near the Shire Offices, attended by a group of girls dressed as Red Cross nurses, which sold flowers, postcards, toys etc. People identified in photograph: Standing slightly behind the group - Mr Smith (Alf J. Smith, Grenville Shire Secretary). L-R, standing: Kathleen Nicol, Violet Smith, Jean Gascoigne, Elva Ball, Miss Barry, Millie Todd, Effie Gascoigne, Stella Todd, unnamed. Phemie Nicol was a daughter of Linton baker James Nicol. She married Alfred Sayce in 1886. Her recollections of life and people in Linton in the early days of the township (1860s to 1880s) are recorded in the 1939 history booklet: 'Looking back over 100 years. 1839-1939'. Identified by Mrs Surman as the Linton football team in about 1900. Mrs Surman also identified names of players, which are inscribed on the back of the photograph. Guernseys were apparently hand-knitted at this time, mostly by the players' mothers. They were all in team colours, blue and white, but had different patterns. Picture in photograph album donated by Mrs Faull. The plane landed at Linton Park as part of an advertising campaign by Astor Radios in 1928. Information provided by Ron Preston of Linton: "The day the plane landed in Linton Park / late 20s. Fairbanks and Harrison operated a garage in Sussex St opposite Bryant's shop. Fairbanks was married to Carrie Murrell's sister Dorrie and William (Bill) Harrison was married to Dulcie Nicol. Among other things that the garage sold were ASTOR RADIOS. To promote ASTOR RADIO a Gypsy Moth double seater aircraft flew low over towns to advertise. ASTOR RADIO was written under both wings. by Boltes) staying overnight. Both Harrison & Fairbanks were taken up for a ride. The pilot "dive-bombed" the local children, many of them seeking shelter under the bridge, as they were frightened, not having seen a plane up close before."
