These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1990, document a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) graduation parade held at the RAAF No. 1 Stores Depot in South Road, Braybrook (Tottenham). The images capture a formal military ceremony marking the completion of initial training by new Air Force recruits and personnel. RAAF graduation parades are significant ceremonial events in which recruits who have successfully completed their training march before family members, fellow service personnel and invited guests, symbolising their transition into qualified members of the Royal Australian Air Force. Such parades reflect the discipline, tradition and esprit de corps of the RAAF, while also recognising the achievement and commitment of those entering military service. The photographs provide a valuable record of the important role played by the RAAF No. 1 Stores Depot at Tottenham and its connection to Australia's defence and training activities during the late twentieth century.6827.01 - Graduation Parade RAAF No 1 Stores Tottenham 1990 Photographs (Advocate 371.1).JPG 6827.02 - Graduation Parade RAAF No 1 Stores Tottenham 1990 Photographs (Advocate 371.1).JPG 6827.03 - Graduation Parade RAAF No 1 Stores Tottenham 1990 Photographs (Advocate 371.1).JPG 6827.04 - Graduation Parade RAAF No 1 Stores Tottenham 1990 Photographs (Advocate 371.1).JPG 6827.05 - Graduation Parade RAAF No 1 Stores Tottenham 1990 Photographs (Advocate 371.1).JPG 6827.06 - Graduation Parade RAAF No 1 Stores Tottenham 1990 Photographs (Advocate 371.1).JPG 6827.07 - Graduation Parade RAAF No 1 Stores Tottenham 1990 Photographs (Advocate 371.1).JPG 6827.08 - Graduation Parade RAAF No 1 Stores Tottenham 1990 Photographs (Advocate 371.1).JPG 6827.09 - Graduation Parade RAAF No 1 Stores Tottenham 1990 Photographs (Advocate 371.1).JPG 6827.10 - Graduation Parade RAAF No 1 Stores Tottenham 1990 Photographs (Advocate 371.1).JPG 6827.11 - Graduation Parade RAAF No 1 Stores Tottenham 1990 Photographs (Advocate 371.1).JPGraaf no 1 store, no 1 store, south road, tottenham

These photographs were taken by The Advocate in 1990 during a tour of the base. No. 1 RAAF Stores Depot in Braybrook (often called the Tottenham RAAF Stores Depot) was one of the most important defence facilities in Melbourne’s west, a massive wartime logistics base built in 1944–45 and operated until 1993. The site expanded significantly after WWII, adding: RAAF Police Dog Training Centre (established 1962), supply‑officer training facilities, accommodation blocks, mess halls, chapels, gyms and sports grounds which transformed the depot into a self‑contained military community. It shaped Braybrook’s industrial landscape, employed hundreds of locals, and played a central role in Australia’s WWII and post‑war supply chain. These photographs capture only a small part of the No. 1 RAAF Stores Depot that one of Australia’s major wartime and post‑war defence logistics centres, representing the scale, organisation, and industrial capability required to support the Royal Australian Air Force from 1945 to 1993. Established during the critical final years of the Second World War, the depot consolidated dozens of scattered storage sites into a single purpose‑built facility, demonstrating the Commonwealth’s shift toward modern, centralised military supply systems. Its extensive warehouses, rail sidings, and specialised training areas illustrate mid‑20th‑century defence planning and the functional architectural style of the Department of Works. The depot played a vital role in national logistics, handling equipment, clothing, barracks stores, demobilisation materials, and returned overseas supplies. It was also a major employer in Melbourne’s western suburbs, shaping the social and economic life of Braybrook, Sunshine, and Tottenham for nearly five decades. The presence of the RAAF Police Dog Training Centre further highlights the site’s operational diversity and long‑term importance to defence readiness. Although most of the depot has been demolished, the surviving guard house and office block on Ashley Street remain as rare physical evidence of a once‑vast military complex. The depot’s legacy endures in the urban form of Braybrook and in the community memory of the thousands who worked there. Its significance lies in its contribution to Australia’s defence history, its impact on the development of Melbourne’s west, and its representation of large‑scale wartime infrastructure.6817.01 - RAAF No 1 Stores Depot South Road Braybrook Site Tour 1990 Photographs (Advocate 285.1).JPG 6817.02 - RAAF No 1 Stores Depot South Road Braybrook Site Tour 1990 Photographs (Advocate 285.1).JPG 6817.03 - RAAF No 1 Stores Depot South Road Braybrook Site Tour 1990 Photographs (Advocate 285.1).JPG 6817.04 - RAAF No 1 Stores Depot South Road Braybrook Site Tour 1990 Photographs (Advocate 285.1).JPG 6817.05 - RAAF No 1 Stores Depot South Road Braybrook Site Tour 1990 Photographs (Advocate 285.1).JPG 6817.06 - RAAF No 1 Stores Depot South Road Braybrook Site Tour 1990 Photographs (Advocate 285.1).JPG 6817.07 - RAAF No 1 Stores Depot South Road Braybrook Site Tour 1990 Photographs (Advocate 285.1).JPG 6817.08 - RAAF No 1 Stores Depot South Road Braybrook Site Tour 1990 Photographs (Advocate 285.1).JPG 6817.09 - RAAF No 1 Stores Depot South Road Braybrook Site Tour 1990 Photographs (Advocate 285.1).JPG 6817.10 - RAAF No 1 Stores Depot South Road Braybrook Site Tour 1990 Photographs (Advocate 285.1).JPG 6817.11 - RAAF No 1 Stores Depot South Road Braybrook Site Tour 1990 Photographs (Advocate 285.1).JPG 6817.12 - RAAF No 1 Stores Depot South Road Braybrook Site Tour 1990 Photographs (Advocate 285.1).JPGraaf no 1 store, south road, braybrook

Archir Harker was married to Ruby Wilson and mentioned in the "Wielands of Heathmont "book. From Greg Coker: In August 2023, RDHS asked Greg Coker to scan a set of negatives. He was able to work out, through various notes, that the pictures were taken by J A Harker of 9 Grange St, Mont Albert in the mid 50s to the mid 60s. Most of the film was 9cm X 6cm B&W negatives. All pictures have been cropped and where appropriate, put through a light filter. They have been scanned at 1600ppi resulting in ~3meg B&W shots (~5meg for the half dozen colour shots). The Harkers certainly liked their hiking – they were ahead of their time. Images scanned from packet of negatives with name of Harker, and receipt dated April 1958. From Andrews Camera Store. (1 copy of each negative ordered) After scanning in 2023 by Greg Coker, the negatives were disposed and just the packet retained. Some photos may be duplciated in other VC Harker/Weiland family records if the original prints were donated. Greg's comments: 1958 – Original Negatives. Marysville Holiday. April 58 was when these were developed, as there was a note on the packet. There is a picture at the top of Woods Point that identifies Marysville.Your Snapshots, by Andrews Camera Stores, 69-71 Elizabeth St, Melbourne. For Dependable Developing Printing and Enlarging.
