Dr Donaldson (Snr) owned the block of land on the corner of Sussex and Grant Streets, Linton. He had a ten-room house set on the back of the block (where the block backs on to Surrey Street), with a large barn fronting Sussex Street. Other identifiable buildings in the photograph are Ball Brothers blacksmith's shop, the Royal Standard Hotel on the corner of Sussex and Clyde Streets, the Shire Hall, Criterion House and Joseph Shepherd's store. The six Mitchell sisters were the daughters of Frederick Mitchell and his first wife Jane McDonagh. They were born between 1862 and 1876. Their mother Jane died in childbirth in 1878. It is not clear who is who in the photograph. Elizabeth Jane Mitchell, the oldest sister in the photograph, married Oscar Ball. Louisa Mary Mitchell married John James Jennings. Albertha Mitchell married William Godden. Caroline Albertha Mitchell (also spelled Alberta) married William Henry Godden in 1902. Mary Elizabeth Yeoman was born in England and married Edwin Ball in 1861. They migrated to Victoria in 1866 and were living in Linton by 1868. In Linton Edwin Ball and his sons established a blacksmith's business.
