Possibly a picnic for returned servicemen from Gallipoli. This photo was taken in front of the Police Paddocks with the police station on the left. Model T Fords parked with soldiers, drivers and locals resting on the police paddock in front of the Queenstown (St Andrews) station. The RACV Volunteer Motor Corps service during World War One was the reason the organisation was granted its Royal prefix. Automobile Club of Victoria members volunteered their time and vehicles to collect returning soldiers and nurses from ships at Princes Pier, Port Melbourne. Trips were also often arranged for convalescing soldiers to country areas for picnics and to “revive spirits”. The soldiers were also picked up from the Austin Hospital in Heidelberg and Mont Park Military Hospital in Macleod. Queenstown (St Andrews) was a common picnic spot. The Evelyn Observer reported on June 9. 1916 "Some 75 returned soldiers visited Queenstown on Sunday, 28th ult., and were hospitably entertained by local residents who had provided refreshments sufficient for 150. Mr. Milne in an appropriate speech welcomed the soldiers, and Mr. Robison suitably responded.” The photo was reproduced page 108 of “The Diamond Valley Story" by Diane H. Edwards. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). This photo shows a large paddock of beet (sugar beet) growing on a flat paddock, probably on the Snowy River flats. The fertility of the Snowy River flats is legendary. Although almost any crop could be grown, in the early years, because of the poor transport from this remote region of Victoria, only crops that could be stored, usually dried crops such as maize, could be produced. After the railway was constructed to Orbost in 1916, other crops could be produced and send by the Railways to Melbourne. Associated with crops such as sugar beet was the need for a huge amount of hand-labour, particularly for harvesting. Sugar beet was usually sent to a factory in Maffra. This photograph is significant because it is rare, and shows a field of sugar beet growing on the Snowy River flats, Orbost, in the 1930s. It shows the flourishing of agriculture in the inter-war period, and following the construction of the Railway to Orbost. This is a small b/w photograph, printed as a postcard. It shows a large paddock with a crop growing and a woman wearing a dress standing in the middle of the paddock with the crop around her legs.SNOWY'S BEET, March 10th 1938.agriculture, sugar beet, orbost

The photograph depicts the 2nd important stage in tobacco growing--transplanting seedlings into open paddocks. It depicts early post-war machinery in use at the time until affordable modern tractors were available. The planting machine has probably been adapted from the horse-drawn era pre-World War 2. The scene is one near Myrtleford in the Ovens Valley. The photograph depicts the slow adaptation of modern tobacco farming methods in the immediate post-war period and the type of terain suitable for tobacco growing. The labour intensive nature of tobacco planting is also depicted.A colourized photograph of tobacco planting activity in a paddock near Myrtleford.Inscription: Planting Tobacco N.E.
