On the 28th of May 1989, the Greek Fund for Arthritis held an educational seminar for the Greek community. The seminar was held at the Merlyn Myer Hall at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. A raffle was held during the event to raise money for the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria (AFV). On the 2nd of March 1995, the Centre for Rheumatic Diseases was officially opened at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. The Centre was a joint project between the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria, the University of Melbourne, and the Royal Melbourne Hospital. In this photo, Sir Gustav Nossal and Patricia Papadopoulos are depicted clasping hands while chatting at the opening. The Arthritis Foundation of Victoria (AFV) recognised the need to make its services accessible to a broad section of the community. As a telephone counsellor for the AFV, multi-lingual volunteers such as Patricia Papadopoulos made it possible for the Foundation to offer referral and information services in languages other than English.
