Document. Greeting Cards. Small whitish tri-fold card with olive coloured printing. The top fold is cut on an angle. It has Xmas Greetings printed on it. The under fold has 'Home, Sweet Home Xmas Card' printed on it. On the back is printed 'The Old, Old Wish: A Merry Xmas and A happy New Year'. All three pieces have a printed border and decoration in the corners. When the card is opended out, it has the same borders on a pale green background. It has 'Shamrocks from Erin' printed under some dried leaves & flowers. On the other side is a poem 'Home! Sweet Home! By T. H. Red Bluff was a grazing district with a few miners, a blacksmith and a storekeeper. Its 30 children used to attend school at Sandy Creek or Tangambalanga until a new school was built at Red Bluff. It opened in January 1906. The school had been proposed by T. Thomas, William Stuckey and James Payne. The original one-room school was built on land owned by Mrs A.E. Stuckey near Five Ways about 4 miles from the Huon Railway station. When the Tangambalanga school was rebuilt about 1910 the old one was annexed to Red Bluff as a second room. When the school opened about 35 pupils attended Grades 1 – VI under W. Boyd Jamieson and assistant Miss A.M Thomas. The first Committee consisted of T. Thomas, Chairman; W. H. Stuckey, Correspondent; J. Payne, C.W. Crosthwaite and T. H. Nevin. In 1914 a teacher’s residence was built. During the First World War, Frank McNamara, a teacher at the school, was awarded the Victoria Cross; another teacher Frank Collins, was killed. Or the 12 ex-students who enlisted, 11 returned. The school itself raised considerable funds for patriotic purposes. Divine Service was held twice monthly in the school for many years. The school closed in 1952 with the pupils and buildings being relocated to the Kiewa Valley Consolidated School. Hung in the public bar of the Rose and Crown Hotel in Bay Street soon after the 2nd World War until major renovations were carried out in aprrox 1986/7. It was then returned or donated to the Port Melbourne Sub-Branch of the RSL, but due to diminishing membership they soon donated it to the PMCC for safe keeping or display. The old Box Hill Metropolitan Fire Brigade in Watts Street. Eight uninformed men standing and sitting on the fire cart and two uniformed men standing beside the horse-drawn cart, in front of the Fire Brigade building (a brick front and weatherboard-sided building). The Box Hill Fire Brigade opened in 1893 and closed on 17 October 1935 at the Watts Street, Box Hill address. The Brigade was relocated to the corner of Whitehorse Road and Linsley Street, Box Hill. Author: Alan Judge Holt amassed a significant collection of historical material related to the Surrey Hills area. Born in Moonee Ponds in 1912 to Edmund Holt and Ellen Ruby Sutton, he married Edna Jean Pallot in 1937. They lived at 62 Broughton Road, Surrey hills, had 3 sons and were strongly associated with the Surrey Hills Methodist Church. Alan was Secretary of the Victorian Lands Department and in his spare time recorded the occupancy of every property in Surrey Hills and Mont Albert at the beginning of each decade from 1890 to 1980. His collection of files and individual cards covers people, places, churches, clubs, businesses and other organisations in the area. Alan used this information to give talks and tours of the area and gifted his material to the local history collection through Jocelyn Hall.Unpublished manuscript / notes written by Alan Holt about settlers in and around Surrey Hills bound in-house. Concerts were a fundraiser that the Association for the Advancement of the Blind first introduced in 1900, based upon the experiences of the RVIB concert tours that Tilly Aston had participated in whilst attending the school. Initially not as successful as hoped, they were re-introduced in 1911 and soon became a regular fundraiser for the fledgling organisation.
