The Tarax company was established by the Pethard family around 1898 as a way of promoting temperance and providing an alternative to beer. Derived from the latin word for dandelion (Taraxicum Officinale) George Pethard Jr took over the business from his father in 1902 and established a brewery behind the family home in Golden Square as well as operating the Tarax Cafe in Bendigo. In 1933 after a 15 years absence from manufacturing Tarax once again hit the milk bars and cafes with George Pethard Jr brewing and bottling non alcoholic ales and beers in Mildura and distributing throughout Victoria.
