Historical information

The Tarax company was established by the Pethard family around 1898 as a way of promoting temperance and providing an alternative to beer. Derived from the latin word for dandelion (Taraxicum Officinale) George Pethard Junior took over the business from his father in 1902 and established a brewery behind the family home in Golden Square as well as operating the Tarax Cafe in Bendigo.
In 1933 after a 15 years absence from manufacturing Tarax once again hit the milk bars and cafes with George Pethard Junior brewing and bottling in non alcoholic ales and beers in Mildura and distributing throughout Victoria.
Tarax was listed on the stock exchange in 1959 and was taken over by Cadbury Schweppes in 1972.
George Pethard was Mayor of Bendigo three times 1940 - 41, 1947 - 48, 1951 - 52.
