About
The City of Greater Bendigo is located in the geographic centre of Victoria, covering almost 3,000 square kilometres. We are a service and infrastructure centre for north central Victoria, and surrounded by 40,000 hectares of regional, state and national parkland. Our municipality includes the thriving smaller communities of Heathcote, Elmore, Goornong, Marong, Redesdale and Axedale. The Aboriginal people of the area are the Dja Dja Wurrung and Taungurung language groups of the Central Kulin nation.
The City has been generating object and paper based items since 1855 when Sandhurst was first declared a municipal district. With the creation of the Bendigo Regional Archives Centre (BRAC) in 2013 much of the City’s paper based archives and public records are now collected and preserved safely while objects generated as part of the day to day official duties and administration tasks related to the governing of the district are managed through the Civic Collection.
