Historical information

Born in Bendigo in1858 to a large family Thomas Jefferson Connelly whose father was American, was named after the third president of the U.S.

After completing high school and his articles he practiced as a solicitor opening his own business in the following year.
Thomas Connelly was elected to the Sandhurst Coundil in January 1885 and was elected Mayor in 1887 and was the first Mayor to be born in Bendigo and the youngest at that time to hold office. He resigned after 12 months but continued to be a member of the Bendigo Hospital Committee and Mechanics' Institute.
He died at the age of 34 in 1892 while conducting a defence case in Kerang. Thomas Connelly had married Frances Reynolds in 1883 and together they had one daughter and two sons both whom died in World War 1. Frances Connelly died in 1927 aged 69.
