SUNDAY SCHOOL DEMONSTRATION. With three times three we coo-ee, The Prince we meet again; Our Princess May we welcome, With heart and voice amain. This was the welcome of the children of the Melbourne Sunday schools. The greeting came from over 30,000 youthful voices to the accompaniment of as many waving flags of diminutive size, held by the children. Probably not one of those who sang so lustily had witnessed the previous visit of his Royal Highness; or knew anything of it except as a traditional event, but the sentiment was a good and proper one all the same. The children were massed on the rising ground in the Domain, and apparently the long wait was not at all wearying. It was to most of them a huge picnic. They lunched on the grass, and filled in the intervening lime with games such as the juvenile heart delights in. At intervals something approaching order, was observed, and then songs, which have been in rehearsal for some weeks past, were sung under the baton of Mr. D. R. Davies, musical director, and to the lead of a united brass band of over a hundred instrumentalists under Bandmaster E; T. Code. A solo was also sung by Mr. H. J. Floyd. At all times the scene was an exceedingly animated one. Most of the children were attired in light costumes, and those in whose dress there was some color provided the necessary variety to make up a most picturesque scene. Probably there were nearly 35,000 adults and children at this spot. They occupied the frontage to St. Kilda-road, from Government House gates to the intersecting thoroughfare beyond. As the children were confined to the high ground, there was a green strip in front of them, and the dark green of the fir trees at the top of the slope made a most suitable background. Between these two lines of even coloring the children, with the easy freedom of youth, made perhaps as pretty a feature of the pageant as could be found anywhere in the whole route of the procession." The visit was part of an Empire tour and a tribute to the response made throughout the Empire during the Boer War. Alec Sandner was a Strathfieldsaye Shire Councillor from 1982 -1987, Strathfieldsaye Shire President from 1985 – 86 and Mayor of Bendigo 2011 - 2012. This album provides at in depth understanding of the many responsibilities of a Shire President and partners. The newspaper articles, mostly collected from the Bendigo Advertiser, provides commentary on the key issues of the times. Fifty page photo album containing invitations, photographs, newspaper cuttings and event memorabilia dating from 7th August, 1985 to 20th February, 1986 documenting events attended by Alec and Mollie Sandner during Alec's time as Strathfieldsaye Shire President. Birthday books are used to record the names and birth dates of friends and relatives. This one has a quote from Charles Dickens for each day of the year .The Dickins Birthday book was chosen a a gift to Clara Skirrow, given on January 19th 1911 by Mr and Mrs B Watson. The artist, Pilford Fletcher Watson (1892-1907) was a well established and prominent artist. He was born in London and lived in Sydney, a foundation member of the Australian Academy of Arts in 1887. His works included local scenery, architecture and the interiors of historic buildings. Many of his works were bequeathed to the State Library of New South Wales. The firm Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd,, was a printer and publisher that operated in London from 1866 to circa 1960s. Its logo is the artist's easel, palette and brush. In 1960 the firm amalgamated with others to become the British Printing Corporation c. 1960. The fly page states that Ralph Tuck & Sons, Ltd. were publishers to Their Majesties, the King and Queen, and Their Royal Highnesses, the Prince and Princess of Wales. This would mean that this book was published in the period when King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, and Prince George and his wife Princess Mary were able to use these titles, that is, from 1901 to 1910. This early 20th-century Birthday Book is significant for containing quotes by the famous writer Charles Dickins. It is also significant for being illustrated by renowned artist Pilford Fletcher Watson. Ownership of a rare and beautifully presented book like this indicates the value placed on keeping in touch with friends and family in the early 1900s. The drawing on the fly page depicts a stone building with side pillars and a logo in the centre of the horizontal beam. It has a gift inscription for Clara Skirrow on January 19th, 1911. This design was modelled on Queen Victoria's nursery bottles and would have been in use during mid 1880s to the early 1900s. This item is very similar to the Alexandra Feeding Bottle featured in the Maws catalogue of 1868. It was named after the then Princess Alexandra of Wales, later Queen Alexandra. This model had a glass stopper and a long rubber tube which connected at one end to a teat and to a glass tube at the other. The fittings were very difficult to clean and would hold milk particles, making them a breeding ground for the formation of bacteria. Sterilisation of feeding bottles by boiling, and boiling of milk and water, were not practiced effectively at this time.Globular shaped feeding bottle embossed with a crown on the upper surface. Built in 1866 in Echuca, the PS Adelaide is the oldest wooden hulled paddle steamer still operating as a passenger vessel in the world. Engines made in Melbourne by Fulton and Shaw. JG Grassie was the original owner who was looking for a wool carrying boat as a commercial venture with the arrival of the rail at the Port of Echuca making the future look bright. Seutonius and Charles Officer of Murray Downs Station joined Grassie in financing the venture and they used the boat for 6 years before David Blair and partners (Echuca sawmillers) bought the Adelaide in July of 1872 and she began her long working life as a logging boat providing a shuttle service between the forests around Barmah and the mill, usually towing up to 3 or 4 barges. The paddle boxes were rebuilt from round to a square configuration in approximately 1924 by Charles Felshaw, local Echuca shipwright. The Adelaide had unusual strength for her size. Her career ended in the mid 1950s where she lay idle tied up near the mill at Echuca wharf. For a short time she was sold to Mildura but fortunately the Apex Club raised funds to buy her back to be a reminder of the riverboat days at the Port. She was lifted out for safekeeping into Hopwood Gardens where she remained on show for nearly 25 years. After restoration by Port shipwright Keven Hutchinson OAM, she returned to the waters of the Murray River on Sunday March 4th 1984 at 5.20pm. After further restoration, in 1985 the Prince and Princess of Wales re-commissioned PS ADELAIDE in a ceremony on their tour of the region. The world's oldest wooden hulled paddle steamer still operating as a passenger vessel today built in Echuca in 1866. It is often considered the flagship of the operational fleet of the Port of Echuca given its age and known provenance to Echuca. The Adelaide is an iconic symbol of the riverboat timber and cargo trade that worked on the Murray River from the mid 1800s. These labels come from the Brewery of Hodgens & Co. who operated the Warrnambool Brewery west of the corner of Timor and Banyan Streets This brewery was established by Edmund Wheeler as the Western Brewery in 1866. Daniel Hodgens the principal of Hodgens & Co. owned the Warrnambool Brewery from sometime in the 1890s until 1909. (Hodgens died in 1907.) Daniel Hodgens also owned the National Hotel and the Pieter Both Hotel and leased the Union, Princess Royal, Prince of Wales and the Bayview hotels in the late 1890s.These labels are of considerable interest as they are artistically pleasing and are part of an important brewery business in Warrnambool in times past. .1 Oval grey and white label adhered to a piece of cream coloured card. It has a sketch of a lake and hills in the centre which resembles Tower Hill .This is surrounded by a wide border containing text. The label is discoloured .2,.3 Dark cream paper rectangular labels with black and white text. There are decorations of berries and leaves in one corner. The primary texts are contained in two long arcs and a black rectangle. Both labels are torn. .2 has a section missing. .4,.5 Rectangular labels with a curved top and extended side panels. It features,on a gold coloured background, the profile of Punch wearing a crown with a striped red and white stocking attachment. Punch has a long hooked red nose and is raising a flask towards his mouth. Above him in the curved top section are two diagonal red and dark green panels containing text. Underneath Punch are two rectangular wide, dark green and white panels containing text. The Ritz was situated near the corner of Lava and Liebig St. The site was originally a hotel which traded under various names, including The Prince of Wales Dining Room, The Stork The Red Lion and later the Princess Royal after a fire in 1880 and it was delicensed in 1900. it later became the Mia mia cafe before a change to the Ritz.
