Thomas Crouch Watts was born on March 7th. 1865, to Joseph and Susan Watts. Before the real estate business commenced, Thomas and his brother were in partnership as booksellers and stationers in a shop at View Point. Thomas lived in a fine house in Rowan Street, which was called 'Ottawa' Thomas started his real estate business in the early 1900s in a shop in View Street. His daughter Edna was the book keeper and typist, Stewart Watson was the salesman and Stanley Phipps (Edith Lunn's father) was the property manager and valuer. When Thomas Watts died in 1914, his daughter took over the running of the business. She married Stewart Watson in 1918. Eventually the name of the business was changed to Bishop and Earl. When the firm of Bishop and Earl ceased to operate after the death of Edith Lunn's father, S.P. Bishop, Miss. June Parry, Secretary of the BHS was a member of staff. Copy of typed letter dated November 2, 1961 from R K Munro to R M Ansett, re Basil Watson's aircraft flight 'the first man to build and fly an aeroplane long distances in Australia way back in 1916-17' The letter details Basil's flight from Melbourne (Point Cook) to Bendigo on 29th November, and carried the first letter to be carried by aeroplane in Australia. 1916 and discusses the carriage of mail by aeroplane. Coloured- The planned township of Sandhurst is placed over the early Bendigo creek township of 1854. The two main streets of the early township were Camp and Auction streets. The street shown as Dowling street later became Queen & Hopetoun streets. The building near the bridge at View Point is Pykes Building. The Post Office was located here in 1854 - 58. Bernal street is now Chapel street. The creeks were straightened to their present courses. Streets on map are. The four allotments along the eastern side of Mitchell Street from Pall Mall to Hargreaves Street, were all first transferred from the Crown on the 21st and 22nd. of April 1854 ( Parish Plan, Section 1C, allotment 15 - now known as 19 - 21 Mitchell Street, Bendigo. The surrounding properties along Mitchell Street were transferred from the Crown to J. Pike (to corner with Pall Mall) and Henry Backhaus ( corner of Mitchell Street and Hargreaves Street, also on the 21st and 22nd. April 1854). At this time, the section of Mitchell Street and Pall Mall, which later came to be known as 'Pikes Corner' was considered a 'semi-swamp, for the ground had all been turned up by the diggers, being the foot of Pennyweight Gully, just where it joined the Bendigo Creek and there was more water than land to be seen of it.....I think the three allotments cost him less than 100 pounds each' (Bendigo Advertiser, 9th November, 1889, page 6, letter 'Pikes Corner').
