The Shrine of Remembrance was built between July 1928 and November 1934 on St Kilda Road Melbourne, in memory of those who served and those who died in the World War of 1914-1918. The design for the Shrine of Remembrance was selected by competition among Australian artists and architects. Eighty-three designs were submitted and the winning design was by two Melbourne returned-soldier architects, Philip Hudson and James Wardrop. The inspiration for the external outline came from one of the seven wonders of the ancient world—the mausoleum at Halicarnassus to Mausolus, King of Caria in South West Asia Minor. Although the country was faced with frightful unemployment and financial difficulty in the late 1920s and the 1930s, so great was the gratitude of the people that the huge amount required to build the Shrine was raised or promised within six months from the opening of the appeal in 1928. (https://www.shrine.org.au/About-Us/History) Lodge Bros were commissioned to build the Shrine of Remembrance in St Kilda Rd in the late 1920s. In 1947, Lodge Bros were manufacturing a further stage at the Shrine of Rememberance, that being the carving and fixing of the bluestone servicemen on the top of the 1939-1945 War Memorial at the Eternal Flame. When funding became available for the new undercroft development at the front of the Shrine in 2001, the Shrine Trustees were eager to explore the possibility of the original stonemasons who built the Shrine, to complete the new development. This came to fruition in 2002-2003 when Lodge Bros constructed all the exterior walls of the undercroft development. Frances Rigg was a local business identity in Kew, at one stage managing the local branch of the English, Scottish and Australian (ES&A) Bank at 175 High Street from c. 1920 until the 1940s. After Francis Rigg’s death, the collection of buttons and medallions was inherited by his son, Ken Rigg (1922-2014). The collection was subsequently donated to the Kew Historical Society in 2015 by Francis' grandson, Adrian Rigg, at the time of the Gallipoli & Beyond Commemoration in 2015. The collection covers a period of almost 40 years. The majority of the buttons are patriotic buttons, issued and sold during and immediately after the First World World War (1914-1918) to raise funds for national and overseas causes. The collection also includes a number of locally significant sporting event buttons and sporting club medallions, issued in the 1920s and 1930s.Patriotic and other pressed tin buttons and badges were produced in large numbers in the first decades of the twentieth century. By nature, insubstantial and ephemeral, they have not always survived. The collections of badges, buttons and medallions in the Kew Historical Society collection is homogenous and yet diverse, ranging from buttons sold to raise funds for the war efforts in 1914-18 and 1939-45, to those used at festivals and sporting events. Because of the manufacturing process, many surviving buttons and badges have been affected by inadequate storage, suffering from oxidisation and physical damage. These survivors are now historically and socially significant artefacts, revealing much about the attitudes and values of the period in which they were produced. A menu card for a dinner on 27 March 1940 when Legatee Stan Savige presented the Legacy Charter to the Remembrance Club to become Hobart Legacy. It was held at Hadley's Hotel in Hobart. Savige was serving in the Second World War and had to obtain special permission to travel to Hobart to fulfil this task. A letter of approval written by Sir Thomas Blamey is also in the archive. Legatee Savige presented the Legacy Charter which was then accepted by the President of the Remembrance Club. Legacy has a programme of donating trees grown from seeds descended from a pinecone of a Lone Pine in Gallipoli. One photo shows President John Stevenson by the newly planted tree, and making a speech, also Legatee Lucky Luscombe speaking. The plaque shown is now known to be incorrect. The species of tree is not an Aleppo Pine but a Pinus Brutia (also known as Turkish Pine). From the early 1970s Legacy had a commemorative programme of providing trees grown from seeds from Gallipoli to various towns throughout Australia. This may be part of that project (see the Lone Pine brochure at 00593) or subsequent propagation undertaken by Legacy. Melbourne Legacy‚ Commemoration Committee was responsible for the collection, propagation, presentation and dedication of Lone Pines from the 24th Battalion tree at the Shrine of Remembrance. On the 14th September 1989 further seedlings were collected with the hope to raise 1,000 trees from the seeds. Thus, Legacy is helping to keep the memory of the Gallipoli 'Lone Pine' alive, its spirit living on today. A photo of the Shrine, it shows the Melbourne skyline and the gardens from an elevated position. It was used on the cover of the programme for the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" in 1973. It was used for several years afterwards as well. The student events were usually held just prior to ANZAC Day.The Shrine is an imposing building in the Melbourne skyline. The beautifully hand written details contain the names of those whose names appear on the bronze plaques on the front of the Soldiers Memorial Institute Bendigo. Each entry has the Soldiers name, person nominating the Soldier, relationship to and address. There are 2972 names entered. The entries were written by Mrs M Collins (nee Stephens) who worked for the Bendigo Advertiser. The work was finished by ANZAC Day 1926 and placed on the day surmounted by wealth of beautiful wreaths stood in the alcove in front the Soldiers Memorial Institute for the unveiling of the Honor Rolls. When placed in the foyer of the Soldiers memorial a page was meant to be turned every day. The book and cabinet (Cat No 8011) were placed in the Foyer (Vestibule) of the Soldiers Memorial Institute. A copy of a speech given by President Bill Rogers to the students at Kambrya College. He mentions the hardships of war, the high number of casualties, and troops in peace keeping operations. He mentions a poem called 'Pittance of Time' - it was written and sung by a Canadian, Terry Kelly. The first verses were: "They fought and some died for their homeland They fought and some died now it's our land Look at his little child there's no fear in her eyes Could he not show respect for other dads that have died Take two minutes would you mind It's a pittance of time For the boys and the girls who went over In peace may they rest may we never forget why they died It's a pittance of time" Document was from a folder of documents donated to the archive by Legatee Bill Rogers that related to his time as President (March 2006 - March 2008).
