... ...Royal Memorabilia...Queen Elizabeth II Royal Memorabilia TO COMMEMORATE THE SILVER JUBILLEE OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II 1952 1977 This item is a vintage ceramic commemorative mug produced to celebrate the 1977 Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. ...Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne, at the age of 25, on the death of her father King George VI on the 6th February 1952. Elizabeth was crowned as the Queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms on June 2nd 1953 at Westminster Abbey. Her Silver Jubilee was celebrated with large-scale parties and parades throughout the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth throughout 1977, culminating in June with the official "Jubilee Days", held to coincide with the Queen's Official Birthday. In addition Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip embarked on a tour of Commonwealth nations including Australia. In March 1977, a Silver Jubilee Parade was held in front of Parliament House, Canberra. The Royal Australian Mint released a commemorative Silver Jubilee 50c coin, which featured twenty-five representations of St Edward's Crown. Two commemoratives stamps were released by Australia Post to celebrate the Jubilee. Australian artist Paul Fitzgerald was commissioned to complete the only official portrait of the Queen during the Silver Jubilee year. The Silver Jubilee celebrations culminated in December 1977 with 35,000 serving personnel taking part in parades across Australia.This item is significant because it records an important event in the British Royal Family, a vital part of the hereditary of many Wodonga residents. It was given by Eva Carmichael, a survivor of the ship Loch Ard which was wrecked near Port Campbell in 1878, to Jane Shields, the young woman who supported her while she was recovering from her ordeal at Glenample homestead at Princetown. The two women remained friends after Eva Carmichael returned to her home in Britain and was married. Jane Shields also married and it was when her daughter visited Eva in England that she was given the tea set to take back home to her mother. Jane died in 1932 and Eva died in 1934 and the tea set was inherited by Jane’s daughters. In 1975 Jane’s daughter, Mrs Ann Fuller, donated a cup, saucer and plate to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. The handle of the cup was mended. These items (cup, saucer and plate) are of high significance as they are closely connected to the wreck of the Loch Ard, and one of the two survivors, Eva Carmichael. Memorabilia connected to Eva Carmichael are precious and rare. These china items (cup, saucer and plate) are coloured royal blue and gold. .1 The cup has a gilt rim on the cup edge and base. The members of the band are shown and named in the accompanying photo. Information about the Fortuna Pipes and Drums is also in Valerie Loyejoy's book " Mapmakers of Fortuna, A History of the Army Survey Regiment" ISBN 0-646-42120-4 and included in the Victorian Collection as item 6000. The Band was originally formed in 1993 from members of the local Masonic Lodge and first played for the Survey Corps Day Parade in 1994 after a request from the then RSM WO1 Phil Meagher. The Army was able to provide the original "Black Watch" tartan kilts. Using an original Survey Corps Badge c. 1915 provided by former WO1 Keith "Aki" Barber, a number of replica metal Survey Corps theodolite badges were struck and used along with the purple Survey Corps lanyard by the band. He enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy in 1939 and served as a navy surgeon for the duration of World War II. He moved to Emerald in 1947 after running a successful medical practice in Hampton, with the intention of retiring and breeding turkeys. But Emerald and the surrounding districts had no doctor, so for the next 34 years, Dr. Murphy provided tireless medical care to the local community. Dr Murphy was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1977 for devotion to the health of the community. He died in 1981 at the age of 76 years and a Memorial Fund was set up in his name to provide support for local students studying Medicine. Promoted to Matron 8.1.1941, posted to 10th AGH on 11.1.1941, embarked for Malaya 3.2.1941 disembarking 18.2.1941, awarded the RRC 1st Class 1.1.1942 in the New Years Honors list signed by Gordon Bennett, detached to 2/4th CCS on 6.1.1942, embarked from Singapore 12.2.1942 for Australia. She was serving in Singapore when the Japanese invaded. She with many other Nurses during the bombing left on the ill fated "Vyner Brooke" which was later bombed by the Japanese in the Sundra Straits near Banka Island. Abandoning the ship she and 5 other Nurses drifted away on a raft and never seen again on 14.2.42. Many others became POW,s, drowned or murdered by the Japanese. Her records state believed killed on or after 11.2.142 dated 8.6.1944 then Now reported missing and for official purposes presumed dead, dated 11.4.1945. Records state she was granted the promotion of Major in 1943. Memorabilia ...Alan Keith GEIER No 24896 (born Albury, enlisted Melbourne) in the RAN on 24.6.41 aged 19 years. He was posted to HMAS Perth on 11.12.1942. The Perth was sunk in the Sundra Strait on 1.3.42. Alan as one of the survivors was taken POW. An initial Red Cross report stated he was a POW in a Java Camp. Alan died as a result of Cardiac Beri Beri on 30.1.1944. He was buried in Siam. The PERTH was sunk by a Japanese torpedo in the Battle of the Sundra Strait. Approximately half the crew lost their lives and about 2/3rds of the survivors returned home after captivity. Refer Cat No 599P for his photo.Commemorative Scroll, framed re A.K Geier. They would not usually arrive as a single package, but as a series of separate mailings. In this case we have the letter from Buckingham Palace. Wilfred (Wiff) Graham Salmon attended Ballarat College 1902 - 1910. He enlisted in 1915 and embarked as a driver with the 4th Field Artillery Brigade. He transferred to the Royal Flusing Corps in 1916. He was killed fighting raiders over the Thames Valley near London on 7 July 1917. 'Wiff' was reputedly the first person to die defending London from a foreign invader since the time of the Norman Conquest. His brother Robert Arthur Salmon was also an old collegian. Other possible family members who are old collegians include Nellie Florence Salmon (ent CPLC 1907; DB 1.8.1899), John Walter Salmon (ent BC 1898; DB 22.11.1889), Geoffrey Salmon (ent BC 1910; DB 3/11/1896). Wilfred's brother Robert (Bob) Salmon is mentioned in the school's 1964 history by Gordon Meins p.68..."Captain (then Lieut) Bob Salmon M.C. on one occasion worked for 7 nights straight in No Man's Land and is credited with rescuing nearly 300 of our wounded."
