Programme - Scots Church Ellerslie 1870-2014 Closing Service, 2014
... . ellerslie scots church presbyterian church uniting church Front ...The foundation stone of the Scots Church Ellerslie was laid by Mrs Jemima Vans Robertson on 1st November 1870. She was the leader and benefactor of the church. Worship services were held in the church for the next 145 years. The Sunday School was started in1871 and until 1977 Ellerslie was part of the Framlingham Presbyterian Charge. The PFA for young people was very active in the 1950s and 60s. Since 1977 the Ellerslie church has been part of the Uniting Church in Australia and was an integral part of the Mortlake Parish. The church closed in 2014 and marked for sale. This program is of some interest as it gives us a short history of Scots Church in Ellerslie and tells of its closure in 2014. This is a program for the closing of Scots Church Ellerslie (2014). It has five double pages with printed material and colour photographs. The pages are stapled together.Front Cover: Uniting Church in Australia, Scots Church Ellerslie 1870-2014 Formerly Presbyterian, Closing Service, 1.30 p.m. Sunday 7th December 2014ellerslie, scots church, presbyterian church, uniting church -

The Uniting Church and former church hall are historically significant at at the Local level (AHC A4). It was built after the Melton’s ‘United’ church and school, erected by Protestant denominations in 1857 in an effort to share resources in the pioneering era, was replaced by individual churches in the 1860’s. The church became the home of and is expressive of the union of the Methodist and Presbyterian churches, began in Melton from the early 1970’s, and formally concluded by the formation of the Uniting Church of Australia in 1977. The Opportunity Shop – Established 1975 by Edna Barrie 1992 Typed copy by Cath MacLean 2011 [Scots’ Presbyterian Church 1964] Additional information to the above summarised from Edna Barrie’s draft notes. Copied by Wendy Barrie January 2012, noting the information might be useful for future research. In 1985 the need for more shop space became apparent. Les [Bone] had plans drawn up (Surv 12/8/84) and approved by the Melton shire Council for a storeroom extension (17.800 x 9500) 1986 the small ancillary rooms at the rear of the timber church were demolished allowing the concrete slab to be laid. The building was completed in 1987. By the early 1990s the old timber Church had deteriorated, this lead to it being demolished in 2/11/1993. It was replaced with a new building containing a Pastoral Office, a meeting room and a furniture and homeware section. It was dedicated by Rev Ian Hickingbotham at 11am Sunday 5th June 1994. Service Awards were presented to 75 Opportunity Shop Volunteers by Rev Ian Hickingbotham. Funds have helped to pay for pastoral work, youth work and extra pastoral support.
