St Albans Railway Station has one of the most layered histories of any suburban station in Melbourne’s west, beginning as a speculative land‑development stop in 1887, rebuilt in 1959 to ease traffic congestion, modernised in 2002, and finally transformed into a below‑ground station in 2016 as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project. These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1990, highlighted the ongoing problems faced by the Department of Transport as trains stored overnight at St Albans Station were repeatedly targeted by vandals tagging carriages, breaking windows, slashing seats, and causing other damage. These photographs are of the St. Albans Railway Station when the electrification of the line terminated at the St. Albans Railway Station. In 1991, the station was located on the city side of Main Road West and the level crossing was still in operational. It wasn't until 2012, when the line was fully electrified to Sunbury as part of the Sunbury Electrification Project. The level crossing was removed in 2016 as part of the Victorian Government Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP).The train pictured is a Hitachi Train, or commonly referred to as the Silver Train. They were Melbourne’s iconic stainless‑steel suburban trains, introduced from 1972 and running until 2014. These trains were the last of Victoria's fleet not to have air conditioning, and by the 2000's, they no longer met contemporary safety and accessibility standards. The Hitachi trains had replaced the Harris trains, also referred as the Blue Train or Bluey. The Harris trains were taken out of service because they contained asbestos. St Albans Railway Station was at one stage the terminus of the suburban electrification service, an honour that it lost to Watergardens Station (Sydenham) in 2002, and subsequently to Sunbury in 2012. With the increase in train traffic, both in suburban electrification service and in the country diesel service, the gates at the St. Albans Railway Station caused significant road traffic delays including causing several fatalities. For many years, the Bendigo train line was one of Victoria's busiest lines thus the boom gates were down for long periods. This created driver frustration, risk‑taking behaviour, pedestrians weaving through gates and cars queueing across the track. The crossing was classified one of Melbourne’s most dangerous crossings and in the 2000's there were three fatalities and over 60 near misses. The level crossing was finally removed in 2016 as part of the Victorian Government Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP).This picture documents the shops that were once located on the west side of the railway crossing on the North side of Main Road West. In April 1908 at the Sunshine Railway Station, a train travelling to Melbourne from Ballarat was struck by a train from Bendigo, resulting in 44 deaths and over 400 injured passengers. Tom Rigg was a former station master at St Albans station and author of a book on the Sunshine Train disaster.Launch of T. The Albion Stationmaster’s Residence stood on the east side of the railway line, immediately north of the original 1891 station building, on the corner of St. Albans Road and the station entrance reserve. It was positioned on what is now the eastern service road / station car park area, facing the tracks. This was the standard placement for VR residences on the Bendigo line in the late 19th century. The house was removed in the 1970's when the station car park was expanded. The removal was also during the time when the practice of the removal of redundant VR housing stock was occurring. No trace remains today.This building was used as the official home of the Stationmaster at Albion Railway Station. This was standard Victorian Railways practice from the late 1800s through the mid‑20th century. Its functions included housing the stationmaster and their family, providing 24‑hour on‑call presence for emergencies, allowing the Stationmaster to supervise the yard, signals, and level crossing and acted as a local administrative base for the station’s operations Because Albion was a junction‑adjacent station (close to the Sunshine triangle and the goods sidings), the Stationmaster’s role at this station was significant.albion railway station, railway, albion
