Information in the "Linton - Sussex Street East Side" file and in the Bennett family file says that Bennett Bros opened their garage in Sussex Street in 1928. A very small photograph which has been made into a souvenir/postcard. The photograph is a view of Sussex Street, Linton, looking to the south-east. Buildings which can be seen in the photograph include Bennett's garage/service station, the Bennett family home, and the Edinburgh Bakery. The photograph is glued to a cream-coloured card which has a decorative edge cut into it. A printed border surrounds the photograph, and the words "A View at Linton" are printed underneath it. Shire of Grenville Hall and Angus shop, Sussex Street, Linton. Dating the photograph: The photograph can be dated to after 1887, when John Angus purchased the shop building (originally owned by Thomas Austin) from B. N. Dodd. 'W. Angus': From 1887 until the late 1890s the shop was run by John Angus' wife Wilhelmina Angus, who often advertised her business in the local newspaper, the 'Grenville Standard' (see photograph of advertisement, Registration no. 2019-346). It is not known when Mrs Angus retired, but it is understood that her son William then took over the shop around 1901. Elsie Jennings, an Angus descendant, recalled in a letter to LDHS that her uncle had run a draper's shop at this site. (See letter in "Linton - Township History - Recollections and reminiscences' file.) In 1905, Will Angus advertised that he had moved his business to the building on the corner of Sussex and Clyde Streets (later this became J. H. Barr's drapery shop.) It is not clear whether the "W. Angus" in the sign refers to Wilhelmina Angus or to William Angus.Enlarged black and white copy of original photograph, which has been mounted on white card. The photograph shows a two-storey brick building, and next to it a double-fronted shop. The two-storey building is the original Grenville Shire Hall, built in the mid 1860s. The fence outside it is being used to post notices. Two large pine trees are between the fence and the building. The smaller shop next to the hall has a verandah supported by round timber posts, and signs across the front of the verandah read "Tailor" and "W. Angus". Two men engaged in conversation with each other are standing to the left under the verandah. Photograph taken in 1988 of building in Sussex Street, Linton: house dates from 1860s, and was owned from 1883 by Joseph Shepherd, and then from c.1930 by the Bennett family who used it briefly as their butcher's shop; later was it a cake shop run by Stella Ralf (Stella Ralf also taught piano). Later (1978-1981) run as op-shop by Mrs. Stella Surman to raise money for Maxwell Park C.E.B.S. camp. House had a later incarnation as a laundromat in 1980s - at this time many women were still without electricity on outlying farms and house blocks. Dr Donaldson (Snr) owned the block of land on the corner of Sussex and Grant Streets, Linton. He had a ten-room house set on the back of the block (where the block backs on to Surrey Street), with a large barn fronting Sussex Street. Other identifiable buildings in the photograph are Ball Brothers blacksmith's shop, the Royal Standard Hotel on the corner of Sussex and Clyde Streets, the Shire Hall, Criterion House and Joseph Shepherd's store. This garage was on the site of the Ball family's blacksmith's workshop. The Todd family lived in this house in the early 1900s. The house was next door to the butcher's shop which was run by members of the Todd family at the time. Stella Todd is the small child on the right of the photograph, whose hand is being held by her older sister (who is possibly Millie Todd). The Bennett Bros Garage operated in Linton from the 1930s-1950s. The building is at 79A Sussex Street. Next to the garage building can be seen the building at 81 Sussex Street. This building was owned from about 1918 by Mrs. Jane Craine and from 1926 by Charlotte Jamieson. Ownership transferred in 1939 to Mrs. Violet Shepherd (Mrs Jamieson's daughter). Mrs. Craine had a confectionery store, which she ran with the assistance of her daughter Lottie, and under Mrs. Shepherd it became a greengrocery as well as a confectionery store. It was afterwards used as a private residence, and for a brief period in 2016-2017 it was the site of the 'Linton Bazaar'. Note: A photograph in the LDHS collection (Registration no. 2017-230), understood to have been taken c.1939, shows a substantially different facade. The original bank and residence were built in 1862, and the building was extended in 1873-74. The three windows on the left of the photograph are in the original building, and the windows and door on the right of the photograph are in the extension. The brick building was cement-rendered at an unknown later date. In 1904 the Bank of New South Wales built a new banking chamber & residence on the west side of Sussex Street next to the Post Office, after which the earlier building became a private residence. It was lived in for many years by members of the Lewers family (Samuel Lewers had been first manager of the Bank of NSW in Linton) and was purchased in the early 1960s by Stella Surman (née Todd). More recently it has been used as an antique shop and tea rooms, and it is currently a private residence.
