Demonstrates how the SEC used signage to confirm procedures for Tramway Crews. A metal, brass coloured sign originally etched and painted with black for the lettering and border lines. The sign has been overpainted with green paint. The sign gives detailed instructions to Tram Crews who may be involved in an incident which delays the service. Until 1960 there were no telephones in Falls Creek. The only access to a phone was at Rocky Valley Camp where the State Electricity Commission (SEC) had an extensive network to Mount Beauty, Bogong and the other camps such as Clover power station and Howman's Gap. There were test points with a phone beside the road where contact could be made to the office in Mount Beauty. The SEC was unconcerned about Falls Creek, so no power was connected until 1960 when Tom Mitchell aired the matter in parliament. Tom was a keen skier. He applied to the Post Master General who was then responsible for telephones as well as mail. The PMG staff came up from Bright and installed an exchange in Diana Lodge. There were only about 15 lines to a post across the road uphill about 20 metres. It was from here that you could put a line from the building into a box where connections were possible. You had to buy a cable from the disposal store. It needed to have an alloy of copper and steel in the wire similar to what the army had used during the war. If the phone failed the owner would have to find the break in the wire, not an easy task in the heavy snow. Then came the telephone itself. Falls Creek was given old-fashioned sets with a hand wound magneto to ring the bell at the exchange. When the operator answered she could then plug a line into another phone line or the exchange in Bright. In the phone were two dry cell batteries that carried the spoken word to the other phone connected. Trunk lines were expensive then, so each trunk call was timed by the minute. The operator would disconnect you after a minute if you did not reply to her question "are you extending?". These telephones were donated by Julian Newton Brown. Julian's Lodge Arundel was known as Falls Creek 11.These telephones are significant because they illustrate the earliest form of technology available to connect Falls Creek Village to other areas.Telephones constructed of polished wood, brass bell, handles and cabling. This is a 1923 booklet containing information on the Telephone Exchanges and the lists of subscribers in the areas of Geelong, Camperdown, Casterton, Hamilton, Mortlake, Portland and Warrnambool. Telephones were in use in Victoria as early as the 1870s with the first Telephone Exchange facility established in Melbourne in 1880. In 1890 the first Telephone Exchange in Warrnambool was established with 35 subscribers. In 1912 the first automatic Telephone Exchange for public use was established in Geelong. This was the second established in the British Empire. This booklet is of considerable importance as it lists all the telephone subscribers in the Warrnambool area in 1923. It is a great research tool as it gives not only the addresses of the subscribers but also in many instances their occupations and business names and in the areas around Warrnambool the names of the properties at that time. This is a soft-cover booklet of 104 pages. It has a dark grey cover with printed information on both sides. It was published in 1923. The pages are stapled together and contain lists of Telephone Exchanges, information on the distances from one Exchange to another in the area and the rates of charges for telephone trunk lines. It also has a list of subscribers in the Camperdown, Geelong, Hamilton and Warrnambool areas. The front cover has a small piece missing at the right hand side edge. This British made type "N1087" and code "N1087" C Ericsson auto flameproof telephone was used in the drum filling platform of the Golden Fleece Depot, in Hovell St., Wodonga. The type "N1087" and code "N1087" C Ericsson flameproof telephone was introduced in 1937 and certified by the British Mines Department as flameproof for Petroleum and Acetone Vapours, in 1938. It was designed specifically for outdoor use in areas where there may be exposure to inflammable vapours and hazardous chemicals such as petroleum. Each contact or switch point is enclosed in its own flameproof chamber, to reduce the risk of ignition and the volume of gas.The Ericsson auto flameproof telephone has local significance due to its use in the Golden Fleece Depot in Wodonga, as well as national and international significance due to its date and the rarity and relatively complete condition.Black Ericsson auto flameproof rotary dial telephone secured in a hinged cast iron case painted black. An example of a field Telephone Set which was used by Australian forces during the Second World War for verbal communications over short distances.Rectangular aluminum green painted box with metal loops secured to the sides of the body. . The housing opens by a hinged fold back lid that is secured by a hook and eye closure. Attached to the inside of the lid is a metal plate with instructions for use together with a circuitry diagram. The Arthritis Foundation of Victoria (AFV) recognised the need to make its services accessible to a broad section of the community. This notebook has been used in the Nullawarre Post Office in the mid 1900s. It lists the telephone exchange codes of places in Victoria and also the code for the telephone charges to those places. Charles and Vida Williams were the Post Master and Post Mistress at Nullawarre Post Office during the mid 20th century years. Nullawarre is a small settlement 25 kilometres south east of Warrnambool and is mainly an agricultural area. European settlement first occurred in the late 1860s. This notebook is of some interest as one used in the day-to-day business of the Nullawarre Post Office in the mid 20th century.This is a notebook which was originally set up as a Postman’s Redirection Book but has been used to list alphabetically telephone exchange areas and their codes. The book has an alphabetical index on the side of the pages and printed black lines and hand-ruled lines on the pages. The cover is light brown with blue binding on the spine and the binding is partly giving way. There is black printing and handwritten writing on the front cover. The material on the pages is handwritten in blue ink and pencil.
