Postcard shows cable trams and many pedestrians in Collins St. 'The Block' described the buildings and footpaths in the area bounded by Collins St, Elizabeth St, Bourke St and Swanston St. From the early years, this was the commercial heart of Melbourne, where the well-off promenaded (walked) to see and be seen by other notable people and where before cable trams the network of horse omnibuses drove in a loop to collect passenger. Before the telephone, postcards were often used to send brief personal or business messages to others in Melbourne or further afield. This article was published by The Advocate on the 19th June 1991 as part of its regular feature "Street Watch". This block of land was once one of the creepiest blocks of land in Sunshine (Deer Park). Nobody knows why nothing grows on it or how long the land has stood vacant. The block is adjacent to the Deer Park Football Club oval, wedge between the players rooms and a private house. It is completely fenced, although by whom, nobody knows. The Sunshine Council owns the land. which was donated by ICI Chemicals as part of a package which included the football oval site, but the Council admits to knowing absolutely nothing about the land. The soil is black and there is no sign of life on its surface. Not even one blade of grass survives. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand.The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s.
