The Mount Beauty Senior Citizens' Clubrooms were officially opened on the 8th December 1972.The building was built and owned by the (then) Bright Shire after much lobbying and fund raising by a local steering committee. It has served the community well for over 50 years.This album is a significant reminder of how the community of Mount Beauty was always pro-active in the development of community welfare and assets.Orange Vinyl covered photo album circa 1960s-1970s. These albums were put together by Allen Clarke, who worked for the State Electricity Commission of Victoria for over 40 years. He was also a member of the Senior Citizens Club. He collected theses press cuttings, put them in these albums and donated them to the Mt Beauty Senior's Club.1. The gasworks in Anstruther St, allowed the streets of Echuca to be lit at night, therefore improving the safety of the citizens of the town. The gasworks were operational for many year providing cooking and lighting facilities to houses as well as to the streets. This picture shows the height of the flood in either 1906 or 1916? The Senior Citizens Club now stands on the site. The Central Kindergarten and Echuca Primary School are also nearby.This postcard is significant because it shows the height of the floods before the town levee banks had been built. It also shows the need for flood proofing the town. It also shows the size of the gasworks in the early 20th Century. Kangaroo Flat Senior Citizens Club was situated at 21 Lockwood Rd on the site that is now the Kangaroo Flat Library. Vanda Joyce Stiles (nee Johnstone) was born in Mount Gambier, South Australia, in 1916. A woman of remarkable resilience and capability, she was widowed during the Second World War when her husband, Leo Stiles, died as a prisoner of war on the Thai-Burma Railway. Joyce devoted herself to raising their two sons in Mount Gambier, meeting life's challenges with strength, hard work, and determination. Joyce latter settled in Kangaroo Flat, where she continued her association as a valued member of the Country Woman's Association (CWA), the Returned Services League (RSL), and the Senior Citizens. Her service badges represent her long-standing commitment to these organisations and the community she supported so generously. A skilled and creative craftswoman, Joyce was known for her talents in cooking, gardening, knitting, crochet, sewing, and preserving the produce she grew. Vanda Joyce Stiles passed away in 1996 in Kangaroo Flat. She is remembered for her resilience, her creativity, and her lifelong dedication to family, community, and service. Cottage of Edward Toohey (died 1898) a Shire contractor and road maker. Ned, his son worked with Frederick Myers building many of the bluestone roads in the Shire of Melton. In the background is the brick house built for Martha Myers in 1967. Martha and husband Frederick (born 1877 in Melton) resided in the Myers (Miers) house on Western Highway beside the gully near Reserve road. Frederick lived there for 86 years. The house was built in 1867 by Henri and Ann nee Dowling Myers. Demolished 1968. Martha Myers house was demolished in 2011 to become a car park.
