A photo of Jim Tierney who was an employee of Legacy for many years. Jim Tierney was the first paid instructor employed by Legacy for physical training classes in 1927. Later he lived at Legacy's Market St premises as a caretaker until he retired in 1953. The photo was used in an article in the Legacy Newsletter. The article shows his long history of service. An article in The Age 6 Jan 1953 mentions that Jim Tierney was the first paid instructor employed by Legacy for physical training classes in 1927 and was listed in demonstration programmes as 'James Tierney FPCV, Chief Instructor Boys Section'. Two legatees with James Tierney and his Corps of Commissionaires service medal. The notes on the back infer that Legatees were involved in the commemoration of James Tierney's life by arranging his burial at sea. An article in The Age 6 Jan 1953 mentions that Jim Tierney was the first paid instructor employed by Legacy for physical training classes in 1927. The service medal he is receiving in the photo comes from the Corps of Commissionaires Association (Australia), which has information at http://www.thecorps.com.au. The details of the three legatees mentioned are: Legatee Samuel J. Benson (Lieut.Commander) – born 12.7.1909, inducted 17 October, 1950, died 26.7.95. Served in WWII with the RAN for 6 years. He was a Junior Legatee before the war, and Legacy found him a job in the office of an Adelaide Shipping Company. After the war he became a Master Mariner, Sea Pilot. He was proposed as a Legatee by Stan Savige. Legatee Donald J. Simonson (Captain) – born 21.5.1920, inducted 27 July 1953, died 11.7.2010. Served in WWII in 39th Battn., Decorated with M.C. Worked as an Importer and Manufacturers Agent after the war. President of Melbourne Legacy 1970. Legatee Adrian Beattie (Captain) – born 21.3.1920, inducted 10.10.1950, died 8.8.1989. Served as a Signal Officer in 24th Btn. Instructor Jim Tierney and a group of boys in a boxing class in the 1940s. The boys are wearing singlets with a DS logo, showing that they were in the Don Esses club. Young men that had outgrown the activities that Legacy provided for junior boys formed the Intermediate Legacy Club (ILC) and they were active from 1929 to the 1970s. One of the activities the ILC undertook was to provide classes for children of incapacitated ex-servicemen. A photo of boys being instructed by Jim Tierney. The embroidered symbol on their shirts are 'DS' which stands for Don Esses. This was another group of boys that Legacy helped. From notes on the ILC (Intermediate Legacy Club): The ILC was formed in 1929 with a total membership of 18. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. Has a strong association with tram crews and the rosters crew workings, possibly D.J. Everett. Prepared by crews from sheets to enable them to know what service times to run, meal times, details of crew changes etc, based on their allocated shift or run from the roster.Thirty eight (38) page red metal spiral binding, notebook with card board covers. Each sheet faint ruled, both sides. Front cover had a drawing of a Scots lassie with a Scots terrier on a lead and a drawing of a street scene in the background with the words "Scotland" in script. Rear cover has a drawing of a castle on it. Each sheet, most left hand side only has the hand written details of each SEC Ballarat run - giving sign on times, notes, timetables, which run taken or taken by, meal times, notes with regard to special instructions, finish times and total hours worked. Image 1 shows covers and image 2, one of the sheets with the runs printed on both side of the page. On a scrap of paper, written on the back of a Ballarat Summary timesheet for a Thursday in 1968 is the run details for 22 run. Has been folded into 4. Freemason Lodges in Victoria were numbered in the order they were founded. The Balaclava Lodge was 162 and is now defunct. Dance cards became popular in the Victoria era. They were often worn looped around the woman's wrist and had a pencil attached (note the small hole for this at the bottom corner of this card).Folded card printed in gold and blue, being dance card for the Annual Ball of Masonic Lodge 162, Balaclava Lodge, held in St Kilda Town hall on 3 September 1896.
