Made by Portland Fibre Group, 1996-2004: specifically Mary Sharrock, Dot Kelly, Ollie Dellar, Doris Amor and Ede Bailey.Tapestry woven in wool on twine warp. Cream coloured background with pale blue flecks of colour, central motif of coat of arms - features two birds standing on grey platforms to either side of shield. Central to the shield is a masted sailing vessel sitting atop blue and white horizontal lines representing the ocean. Around the sails of the vessel are radiating yellow rays and a blue surrounds representing sunburst against blue sky. The top third of shield shows a pair of sheep heads against a red background. Above the shield is depicted a helmet, crowned with a whale. Blue plumage is shown coming from the helmet and framing the whale.Front: (Weavers' initials, except Ede Bailey, woven into tapestry and are seen on the hem). Below is a bordered quadrant with the images left to right, of a whale half submerged in the ocean with a spout, a sailing ship with 3 masts and 3 sails per past, a light house, and an animal hanging limping from a hoist. This letter also relates to the history of the Portland Council for the Encouragement of the Arts (CEMA) and the Portland Arts Centre.This letter is part of the personal archives of K. S. Anderson who built Portland Harbour but also worked hard for the establishment of the Arts Centre in Portland. It realtes to the funding and building of the Arts Centre and to the history of the Portland CEMA Group.Envelope which contained a letter from L. Fell, Portland Town Clerk to K.S. Anderson, 24 May 1973. The envelope bears the name of the Town of Portland at the very top. Below which it is addressed to K. S. Anderson. It has a purple stamp in the top right corner which has the image of Queen Elizabeth II on it along with 7c.
