At first, from 1885 as Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), their Trained Nurses walked the streets and lane ways amid the slums of central Melbourne. As the Society expanded public transport was used, and bicycles were bought by the Society in 1903 and used in inner areas until 1955. During the Spanish flu epidemic, in 1919, MDNS appealed for assistance to procure Motor vehicles so the Nurses could visit an influx of cases. Through trusts, grants and donations four 'Ford 'T Model' cars were procured which enabled the nurses to triple their visits. Through constant use the cars were in such a poor state they were sold in 1927. A Motor Auxiliary was formed in 1929 to take Nurses to patients, and some nurses used their own cars; even a motorcycle was used by one nurse in 1933. All these forms of transport were intermingled until, having received Royal patronage; the now Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) had its own full fleet of vehicles.A slightly fuzzy black and white photograph which shows six Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) Sisters standing at a tram stop wearing uniforms of full length coats and grey brimmed hats bearing a Maltese cross insignia on the hat band. Set of two sheets of paper tickets - 3 x 1d and 2 x 1.5d, unnumbered for the Sandringham - Beaumaris electric tramway - possibly printed as a sample for discussion. This style of ticket was used for child fares. The reference pages 129 to 130 and figure 6-24 refer. This shortlived tramway 1926 to 1931 was known as "B Division" and would have allowed separate financial accounting. Set of two sheets of tickets for the Sandringham - Beaumaris tramway. The tramway operated from 1926 to 1931 when it was cut back to Black Rock. Tickets are printed for the various available sections and by each division for various fares, but without actual ticket numbers. See reference pages 129 - 130 for details and various figures for examples. Photo shows the installation of new special work or junction at High St and Brighton Road at Carlisle St St Kilda 17/3/1974. The work was part of the major road widening project of High Street between St Kilda Junction and Carlisle St with the trams relocated into their own reservation. The track was raised 18 inches or about 450mm above the previous road level. The postcard photograph shows PMTT No. 23 a Maximum Traction bogie, straight sill combination with drop end at the Malvern Burke Road terminus, c1916. See page 60 of Destination City 5th edition for details of the tram. Purchased by the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust, sold to the Hawthorn Tramways Trust during 1916, in 1920 absorbed by the MMTB and classed "O". They were sold to Adelaide in 1927. There is a large "1" in the front window, indicating the route number and the destination of Burke Road.
