The Melbourne cable tramway system operated between 1885 and 1940.Former Melbourne cable tram bell used for fortnightly and annual meetings of Ringwood Apex Club, mounted on timber base with metal shields showing presidents for each year from 1966 to 2003. Newspaper cutting from The Courier, Ballarat, Tuesday 20/9/1994 of the reproduction of a postcard photograph showing an ESCo tram soon after opening running west bound in Sturt St with the Town Hall in the background. Shows the development of the Gardens at the time and buildings on either side of Sturt St. and type of poles etc. The tram is fitted with a destination board on the front dash - the type used soon after opening in 1905. Demonstrates ticketing systems in Ballarat and in particular the use of a tourist ticket to enable people to travel around the whole of Ballarat on the trams. Yields information about the ticketting system and how surplus stocks were overprinted for future use. Note the spelling of the word "employe" with an accent over the e - an acceptable practice in Victoria at the time - a US based spelling. Book scanned into multiple parts.
