It is difficult to say exactly when and where this photograph was taken. It was most likely around the year 1900, but could have originated from anywhere in the region. One site at which significant tree-clearing occurred at this time was the Nobelius nursery, where many native trees were removed in favour of trees producing fruit and other products of the nursery. It can't be confirmed that this picture was taken there, but it is certainly a possibility.Tree clearing was one of many important activities in early Emerald, both to collect timber for firewood and construction, and to open space for Nobelius' nursery and other agricultural and residential properties.A black and white image of two woodcutters manually sawing through a large tree. The two boys in this photograph are Stanley (7) and Maurice (5) Kelly. The two boys were lost in the bush near Orbost for three days. The had been sent by their mother, Mrs Parker, to borrow tea and sugar from a neighbour but became lost on the way home. They were found, scratched and with clothes torn, by a woodcutter, Mr W. Morell. In April 1914, the Federated Mining Employes' Association, Victoria, put in a submission to establish improved wages for mining employees. A hearing in the Commonwealth Arbitration Court was to be held in four to six weeks from the lodgment of the plaint. The new log of claims would provide for a general increase in the previous log rates. The new rates affecting Victorians were: miners, hard labor ordinary 12/- a shift; sinking 13/4; rising 14/6; underground stoping 14/-; miners, machine labor to receive 1/- per shift in addition to the above rates; timber men ordinary 13/2; shafts 16/2 a man; bracemen 12/-; truckers underground 11/6; open cut miners 13/-; laborers underground 11/-; on surface 10/-; boys between 16 and 19 9/-; over 19 full pay; shift bosses 15/-; tailings dame man 11/-; sluice man 11/-; grating man 11/-; box cleaners 11/-; pump-hole man 12/-; dressers and cleaners 13/-; man in charge erecting legs 12/6; woodcutters 12/6; woodcutter man, horse and dray 1/-/-; blacksmith 14/-; carpenter 15/-; bricklayer 15/-; tool sharpener 13/-; blacksmith's striker 11/-; rough carpenter 13/-; horse driver 11/-. Karlie Robbie wrote: This information was on the photo my great uncle donated to the Chinese Dragon museum it has a connection to Bendigo's Ah Poo / Lee family who were involved in the founding of the Chinese Easter parade.. My uncles recollection of the day is written on the back: "Photo of our old bark hut at Nowa Nowa year 1906. Dad has the gloves on with Mr Barlow. My 2 brothers are beside me and my stepbrother Les "Lee" [Ah Poo] is standing near door. Mum and my stepsister May are inside. They would not have their photo taken. Mr. Bulmer conducted a church service after lunch on that Sunday morning. N. A. Young". Les's father Alexander James Ah Poo (later changed to Lee) and grandfather James Ah Poo were both prominent goldfields interpreters. Alexander predeceased his father and his widow Alice remarried Alexander Young, and it's their combined family who feature in this photo. Kurt Winker was born in Germany in 1902 and was a survivor of the "Arandora Star". He was sent to Australia on the "Dunera" where he was interned at Tatura 1940-1945.A large white tree with bare limbs in centre of picture. There are fallen limbs at the foot of the tree. There are rows of other bare trees and other trees with green foliage as well as several tree stumps scattered among them. The sky and earth are sepia toned with a scattering of white fluffy clouds. Black and white coloured birds are in the sky and a black bird is perched on top of one of the branches of the tree. Walking in a line though the trees are eleven figures with red coats, black pant and white hats. Some are carrying axes on their shoulders.
