The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. This scrapbook album belonged to Ilma Margaret Ernestine Haeusler (née Tasker), born in 1900 in Tallangatta. Ilma died in childbirth in 1928, leaving her husband Louis Alfred Haeusler (b.1878), and one surviving son, John Alfred Lyell (b.1922). The scrapbook was gifted to Ilma from her Aunt and contains Tasker family photographs, and postcards and greeting cards Ilma received in the 1910s-1920s.This item has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of domestic and family life in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local history, social history and women's history. An olive green photographic album with a red, green and yellow floral motif on the front cover. This image depicts the same area - if at a different angle - as VEMUP0008, which dates from 1907, and VEMUP0694, which dates from 1909. Most buildings in VEMUP0008 are also in this image, but there are some in that on which are not visible here - though they may simply be out of frame. There also appear to be less trees than in the 1907 photograph, appearing somewhat more similar to 1909. In 1908, a large bushfire threatened Emerald, putting Archibald & Moffatt's store at risk (with it igniting and being put out several times) alongside many other buildings in and around town - and destroying the town's church. It is possible this photograph was taken not long after that fire, in the early 1910s. It is also possible it was instead from earlier than this, but the telegraph line clearly visible in this photograph don't appear to be visible in the 1907 and 1909 pictures (though these pictures are also unclear. Tentatively I would date this to the early 1910s.This image forms part of the record of the historical development of Emerald. This item is a black and white photograph printed on glossy photo paper. The reverse features printed technical information, Fujifilm logos, and a handwritten accession number. Reproduction slide of a photograph of a cable tram, trailer number 201, with the destination or Carlton with the grip man and conductor standing in front of the tram. Both are young men. The conductor is adorned with his safety pins and trip slips, that he would punch a hole in when he sold or collected a fare. The bell punch in the conductor's right hand would sound a bell to indicate the fare had been collected. There is a church vicarage in the background - at Prahran terminus in Chapel Street outside Trinity church. Underneath the photo is written "A Paradox: two Badger ?" which is a reference to the General Strike in Brisbane of Jan 1912 by Brisbane Tramway Company workers over the wearing of Union badges which was strongly opposed by the Company Manager Joesph 'Boss' Badger. See also item 7485 for a similar-themed photograph about the Badger. We were unable to find any other copies of this postcard, or any information about it, with our surface-level search. The presence of the Church of Christ in 'Road to Emerald' dates this postcard to after 1913, but otherwise sparse Main Street mean it's unlikely to be much later; specifically, the absence of a post office next to the church means this photograph was almost certainly taken in the 1910s. The story was first serialised in Everybody's Magazine before being published as a book, and tells of a man who dreams he lives the life of an early hominid. Most of the narrative unfolds through the eyes of Big-Tooth, one of the more primitive "Cave People," set against the more advanced "Fire People" and the animal-like "Tree People." Hard cover book. Night and Morning Author: Lord Lytton Illustrator: Victor Prout Publisher: Collins Clear-Type Press Date: 1890s–1910s Further Information: Red Cloth plain hardcover with lettering and patterning to spine in gilt. The spine has a Library label with an inscription.fictionNight and Morning is a novel by Edward Bulwer-Lytton (later Lord Lytton), originally published in three volumes in 1841, although the preface reproduced in most later editions, including the subject volume, is dated 1845 and refers to a revised edition. The story centres on two orphaned siblings, Philip and Sidney, who are separated by misfortune and a scheming relative after their father's death, and who endure hardship and social injustice as they fight to reclaim their family's name and honour. The novel explores social justice, moral dilemmas and class distinctions, opening in a small Welsh village where Reverend Caleb Price grapples with his own failures, before a mysterious stranger arrives revealing plans for a secret marriage he wants kept quiet because of his wealthy uncle's likely disapproval. The plot turns heavily on inheritance law and the legitimacy of the brothers' birth; Lytton reportedly consulted a real lawyer on the legal plot points to get the details right in his novel.warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, shipwrecked-artefact, book, night and morning, lord lytton, victor william prout, edward george earle bulwer-lytton

From its beginnings in 1958, the Society has mounted exhibitions and/or displays, in early days in shop window and in community spaces located in the Kew City Hall (later Kew Library), and since 2010 at the Kew Court House. Exhibitions typically coincided with the annual Kew Community Festival in March, but after 2013 evolved into three new exhibitions yearly at the Kew Court House. Smaller displays continue to be mounted in the Kew Library. This ladies suit belonged to an elderly neighbour of the donor, Margot Miller, who lived in Black Street, Brighton in the 1970s. The neighbour had offered Margot a selection of her old clothing, dating from the early 20th century, as she wanted somebody to hold onto and care for the items after she died. Before Margot could take the items the neighbour was moved into a nursing home and, while cleaning out the house, the woman's son took the clothing to the tip with a load of rubbish. Margot happened to see him leave and was able to follow him and retrieve the clothes. They remained in the Miller family for many years; some were worn by Margot's daughters and some were ultimately passed on to others. Based on our research, we believe that the suit's original owner may have been Julia Richards (nee O'Keefe, c. 1882-1976), who lived at 59 Black Street during this time. Born in Ireland, Julia emigrated to Queensland in 1900. She married William Alfred Richards in 1911 and lived with him in Ayr, near Townsville, where they ran a hotel. It is unclear what became of William, but by the mid-1920s Julia and her two children were living in Brighton, where she remained until her death in 1976, aged 94.Cream wool ladies suit consisting of a jacket and skirt. As stated in the postcard, Jack Nobelius, the infant in the photograph, is only 12 months old, dating the image to late 1914- early 1915, as Jack Nobelius was born on the 21st of December, 1913. Therefore, this postcard would have been written during the First World War, following Australian commitment to fight Germany as a dominion of Britain. Jack Nobelius was the son of Carl Oscar Nobelius and Florence Cathleen Nobelius (Prescott). He also had an older brother, Roland Nobelius. This postcard not only captures the early life of Jack Nobelius, but also provides insight into timelines on his life, the brief natures of postcards, their use as new years blessings, and the unique nature of Florence Nobelius' handwriting, featuring informal, somewhat rushed cursive script, with some errors in the writing. This photograph is believed to have been taken at the Bosisto's distillery on Woori Yallock Creek at what is now Butterfield Reserve, Emerald. Chemist and later parliamentarian Joseph Bosisto (1824-98) established a number of distilleries in the area through the 1860s and 70s; the Butterfield Reserve still is believed to have been established in 1876. This photo may have been taken around 1916, when Australia was still the world's leading supplier of eucalyptus oil - by this time a globally popular product. By the 1920s, Joby Brady and his son were running the distillery business.Bosisto's eucalyptus distillery was an early Emerald industry with global significance; eucalyptus oil was believed to be the first distinctively Australian product exported overseas. This photograph is a very clear representation of the industry - to the extent that it is even used repeatedly in Euca's webpages discussing the history of the industry.Captured in black and white, a working eucalyptus distillery processes large quantities of eucalyptus leaves into eucalyptus oil. Two men stand holding tools, one under the tin roof of the distillery and another on a horsecart carrying a new pile of leaves. Another stands behind the distillery, carrying more leaves. The largest pile of leaves is in front of the still. The still is sheltered by a tin roofed structure with open walls, wooden support beams, and a chimney in the background. Further in the background, trees can be barely seen. This photograph is a scanned copy, glossy on the obverse and with normal paper texture and handwritten notes on the reverse.Reverse: "Distilling Eucalyptus / Bosistoes.
