Duke of Edinburgh arrived in Sydney on 3rd February 1954 aboard the SS Gothic, a passenger liner converted into a royal yacht. Their arrival attracted an estimated 1 million onlookers in a city with a population of 1,863,161 people. The royal couple visited 57 towns and cities during the 58 days they spent in Australia. They travelled the country by plane, train, ship and car from Cairns in the north, Broken Hill in the west to Hobart in the south.
