The Wireless Institute of Victoria was established in 1910 and amateur radio operators (called hams) in Victoria were issued with licences by this institute. Cards such as this one were exchanged by operators to confirm a contact between two amateur radio operators anywhere in the world (called QSL cards). The cards contained information regarding the radio contact made, the strength of the signal, the type of transmitter etc and the words, codes and abbreviations used were known internationally. This card, which is an unused one, belonged to Ted Salamy who had the call sign A 3AJ. This licence was issued in 1924 and was the 35th amateur radio licence issued in Victoria. It is believed that this was the first amateur radio station established in Warrnambool. Ted Salamy (1903-1977) was the son of Michael Salamy who established jewellery shops in Timor Street and in Liebig Street in Warrnambool in the 20th century. Ted Salamy was later the proprietor of these stores up to the 1960s when he retiredThis card has considerable local significance as an early Warrnambool amateur radio card and as one belonging to a prominent 20th century Warrnambool businessman, Ted Salamy. This is a souvenir jug made for the local tourist trade in the 1960s. The jug has an image of Lady Bay, Warrnambool. The official name of Lady Bay is Warrnambool Bay. The jug was made by Westminster Fine China Australia, a firm established in 1954 by the cutlery and silverware firm of Stanley Rogers and Sons of Melbourne. Westminster China was fist established in Cheltenham in Melbourne and after 1977 it was operating in Sandringham, Victoria. It was still operating in the 1990s and produced mainly souvenir and giftware. This jug is retained because it is a good example of the souvenir items offered to local tourists in the 1960s. This is a small white china jug with a gold strip down the handle and a gold rim around the opening and the lip. On the side of the jug is a multi-coloured image of the lower lighthouse and Lady Bay, Warrnambool. Although the organization name is not in the book, this ledger appears to have been used as a financial record for the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute from 1904 to 1911. Most of the entries are the names of those subscribing to the Mechanics' Institute Library, the finances connected to the School of Art and Design and moneys received in connection with the Mechanics' Institute billiards room. The Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute was one of the earliest established in Victoria, being founded in 1854. The School of Art and Design, the second of its kind in Warrnambool, was established in 1883 and continued to be administered by the Mechanics' Institute until 1908. It eventually became part of the Warrnambool Technical School, opened in 1913. A local Museum was a feature of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute for many years. A billiards room was a recreational feature of many Mechanics' Institutes. The Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute closed in the 1960s with the library section continuing and the building was demolished in 1975 to make way for new Warrnambool Council buildings (including a new library)This ledger is of considerable interest as it is an early record of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute, one of Warrnambool's most influential organizations. The names listed in this ledger are of historical interest and provide much material for local history researchers.This is a ledger with a black cover with gold printing on the front. This item was made by Crest Records, a Melbourne company established by Marcus Herman that recorded pop, jazz, folk, liturgical and other music from the early 1960s to the mid 1970s. The music and words of ‘A Silver Star’ were by Glorie Attrill nee McLean(1911-1998) who was born in Glenormiston, Victoria. She lived and farmed for some years at The Sisters and in her later years lived at Terang. She wrote several songs, with ‘A Silver Star’ being her best-loved composition. Her two autobiographical booklets are ‘Sunset Serenade’ and ‘At Twilight’. John McSwain was the son of an acquaintance in her childhood days. This record is of interest as the one of the songs was written by a local woman, Glorie Attrill and the disc was recorded in Warrnambool in the 1970s.This is a circular 45 R.P.M. black disc with silver-coloured printing in the centre. The cove has a black and white photograph of the singer on the front with white and blue printing, an image of a star and the logo of the recording company. There are also two pink labels from the retail shop where the record was purchased. Edward ( Ted) Salamy (1903-1977) succeeded his father in business in Warrnambool as a jeweller and was at 179 Liebig Street when he retired in the 1960s. On 1st December in 1924 he obtained an amateur radio licence ( Call sign A3AJ). This was the 35th licence issued in the State of Victoria and the first in Warrnambool. The original licence cost two shillings and sixpence. Amateur radio, still a popular hobby today, was particularly important in the 1920s when few people had radios of any sort and there were no provincial radio stations. People were able to access amateur radio sets to listen to such broadcast as overseas cricket matches. This amateur radio set is of considerable historical importance as it belonged to Ted Salamy, credited with being the first to operate an amateur radio station in Warrnambool.This is a rectangular box containing five valves, a radio frequency mechanism and three coils with fine copper winding. The mechanisms are connected by wires and metal screws. The box has a raised black -composite material front which has a voltage meter, three switches or knobs and a tuning dial. The first three photographs of Royal Australian Survey Corps training courses were probably taken in the 1960s. As they lack any annotation, the course title/type, trainee and instructor names, dates and locations are unknown. The courses were possibly conducted at the Army Survey Regiment at Fortuna, Bendigo; or the School of Military Survey either at Balcombe Victoria; or Bonegilla, Victoria. The Kiewa Valley has promoted itself as a tourist hot spot since the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme concluded. Mt Beauty began as a construction town and was to be sold off but tourism became promising so the SECV handed the town over to the Bright Shire, houses were sold and businesses commenced. From the early 1960s the town promoted itself and Falls Creek as a tourist destination. The Kiewa Valley Accommodation group combined with the local advertisers to publish this brochure.This brochure promotes tourism all year round promoting the local businesses enabling them to succeed. As tourism is the main industry in Mt Beauty and Falls Creek since the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme finished, this advertising is important.
