Prior to the election of female Councillors and Mayors in the 1960’s, the Lady Mayoress role was one of the few ways women could officially undertake civic duties. Mayoresses made important contributions to their local communities through their charity work and as ambassadors for their region on a state and federal level. They also undertook some Mayoral duties on occasions when their husband was unavailable. Elizabeth Stolz served as Mayoress from 1981 - 82.Black and White photographic portrait sitting behind oval mount.lr; Don Semmens Bendigocity of bendigo mayoress, city of greater bendigo portraits, city of bendigo mayor, lansell pendant, mayoress stoltz, mayor stotz

After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 22 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German). The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view. (Margaret Picken, 2020)This drawing is one of a series created by Margaret Picken for a number of real estate agents in Melbourne between 1983 and 2005. (Margaret Picken, 2020)The R Haughton James House (former) was built to a design by Robin Boyd in 1956-57. With its unusual plan form, this is one of Robin Boyd’s most important residential commissions of the period. The house was identified in heritage study as being of architectural significance at the state level. Alterations to the house were made in 1967, 1989, and 1999.
