The Beechworth Burke Museum
Animal specimen - Australian Spotted Crake, Trustees of the Australian Museum, 1860-1880
The Australian Spotted Crake can be found the south-east and the south-west of Australia. It is unlikely to be seen in Queensland or Tasmania and frequents much of New South Wales, Victoria and north-eastern South Australia. They reside in wetlands and are often found in dense growths of plants. The Australian Spotted Crake is a timid bird which flicks its tail as they walk. If disturbed, they may run away in a crouched position with their tail raised. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum and the National Museum of Victoria, as well as individuals such amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is a small, stocky bird with yellow legs and bill. The Australian Spotted Crake has grey colouring on its neck and an orange on the nape of its neck. The torso and rear are striped with black and grey/cream colours and have white spots along the rear. The specimen has brown feathers on the wings. It stands on a wooden platform in a standing position with a paper identification tag tied around its left leg. 19c Spotted Water Crake. Von Guerard's Yalla-Y-Poora (print), Print of Von Guerard's Yalla-Y-Poora painting, ca2009
This modern photo of a 19C Eugene Von Guerard painting of the Ararat-district homestead of Yalla-Y-Poora, was created ca2009. But the accession information is not clear about the date of accession, or the format of the Von Guerard painting (print, photo, etc.?), or the place where the original painting is held. The photo is not significant in its own right. But despite the lack of detail in the accession information, it does point to a source of information about an important local homestead, Yalla-Y-Poora: i.e. the Von Guerard painting, which merits further investigation. Laminated print, dating from the year 2000 or so, taken of a Von Guerard Painting found in, or part of, a Diary.Text on the back of the laminate [probably written at the time of acquisition] describes how the photo was created: "Painting by Eugene von Guerard / Yalla-Y-Poora / Copied from a diary loaned / by Judy Armstrong". -

Warrak Cricket Club ca early20C, Warrak Cricket Club, ca early20C, ca early 20C
Early photo of the Warrak Cricket Club (probably early 20C)This photo was donated by a regular donor to the Langi Morgala Museum.Unfortunately its date of manufacture is not yet known, but local Warrak knowledge may yet supply this date. It is of local significance to Warrak because of its rarity and presumed early date. This significance is ameliorated because the date of manufacture is so far only assumed; but if the Warrak Cricket Club is still in existence, the provenance and date of the photo may be more firmly established by talking to current members. Further research is warranted: local history, published or unpublished, may give further information.Black-and-white photo, with information written on a cardboard label attached to the photo.Inscription: on a cardboard label attached to front of the photo: "Warrak Cricket Club / Four photos donated by Mr J.Foster 1979"warrak, warrak-cricket, warrak-cricket-club, 19c, early-20c -
