Index, bib, ill, maps, p.269.non-fictionFollowing Mark Johnston's acclaimed illustrated histories of the 7th and 9th Australian Divisions, this is his long-awaited history of the 6th Australian Division: the first such history ever published. The 6th was a household name during World War II. It was the first division raised in the Second Australian Imperial Force, the first division to go overseas and the first to fight. Its success in that fight, in Libya in 1941, indicated that the standard established in the Great War would be continued. General Blamey and nearly every other officer who became wartime army, corps and divisional commanders were once members of the 6th Division. Through photographs and an authoritative text, this book tells their story and the story of the proud, independent and tough troops they commanded. australia - army - 6th division - history, divisional histories

This medal/badge was given to Wilfred Clarence Busse, born in Chiltern in 1898, supposedly during his time at Wesley College. The lion on the badge is a perfect match for Wesley College's logo, and the words Sapere Aude are the school's motto. Busse completed his secondary education as Wesley College in the early twentieth century, and went on to study law at the University of Melbourne. As a lawyer, he spent time in the room of Supreme Court Judge Bernard Cussen (1859-1933). Judge Cussen was popular, known for being just and precise and for completing through statutory consolidation in his spare time. As well as working as a lawyer, Busse wrote historical fiction inspired by his life in Chiltern, these included The Blue Beyond; A Romance of the Early Days in South Eastern Australia" and "The Golden Plague: A Romance of the Early Fifties," which won the T.E.Role gold medal for the best historical novel in 1930 and went on to become a best seller. He was a member of the Chiltern Athenaeum until his death in 1960. Wesley College was founded in 1866 in St. Kilda by Rev. James S. Waugh, Dr James Corrigan, Rev. Daniel Draper and businessman Walter Powell. Wesley College was a founding member of the Associated public School of Victoria in 1908. Originally a boys school, coeducation was introduced in the 1970s, and the school continues to function today and has a reputation as one of the best schools in Victoria witth regards to VCE and IB scores. This item is significant for its connect to W.C. Busse and his literary and non-fiction work inspired by Chiltern. The object is a metal-open work badge depicting a stylised lion surrounded by a oval, which appears to resemble a belt, and bears the words Sapere Aude (translation Dare to be Wise). Below the main body of the badge is a short chain attached to a safety pin at the other end. Wooragee Landcare was formed in 1989 to promote sustainable conservation and land-use practices in the North-East region of Victoria. The organisation's work has included public awareness and education campaigns to control invasive, introduced species and protect native wildlife, such as campaigns to bait or trap foxes and to identify and monitor quoll populations in the region. The organisation has drawn on the work of a variety of Government and academic experts to inform best practice approaches are utilised. In 2004 Andrew Murray, a leading quoll expert from Parks Victoria, conducted training for Wooragee Landcare members and the local community in how to identify potential quoll habitat and populations (through identifying scat and other methods). Spotted-tail or Tiger quolls were known to have lived in the Mt Pilot and Stanley Plateau region previously but habitat encroachment, competitor species such as foxes and natural disasters had reduced sightings in recent years. The Spotted-Tail quoll (formerly known as the Tiger Quoll) is the largest of four species of native marsupial carnivore on mainland Australia, and the second-largest carnivore (after the dingo). The species' scientific name, Dasyurus maculatus, references its' 'hairy tail'. Adults are approximately 125cm long, including their long tail, and weigh around 5 kilograms. The Spotted-tail quoll is currently considered to be a threatened species, but other species are currently listed as endangered. This photograph is significant as an example of wildlife protection awareness programs undertaken by Wooragee Landcare Group in the 2000s in Indigo Shire.Landscape coloured photograph printed on gloss paper.Reverse: WAN NA 0ANA2N0 NNN+ 1 8743 / [PRINTED] (No.23) / 269wooragee, wooragee landcare, indigo shire, north-east victoria, andrew murray, queries about quolls, wildlife, conservation, farming, predators, spotted tail quolls, quolls, marsupials, south-east forests, mt pilot, stanley plateau
