After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 23 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German).The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view. A collection of nine postcards donated by the Bass Coast Op Shop. Information on the back of No. 276-05. "Koala Bears were first seen by white explorers in the Blue Mountains, 1798. Early colonists from N.S.W. called it a "monkey bear". Koala means in Aboriginal "does not drink" or "no drink". They are slow-moving, tree-climbing, friendly marsupials with thick woolly fur coats, large ears and rubber nose. They live in gum trees and feed upon their leaves. HongkongThis item, a souvenir from Hongkong from between the wars (circa 1923) was brought home to Research, Victoria by Bill Teagle who was serving in the Royal Australian Navy (1919-1945). According to Bill's neice Valerie Waller (nee Feldbauer, daughter of Violet and Theodore 'Curly' Feldbauer), her Uncle Bill would always bring some sort of souvenir home from his travels for family members. The item ( along with a series of postcards from Japan of the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1 September 1923) was possibly given by Bill Teagle to his sister Margaret Rose (formerly Ingram) who later married Richard Edward (Eddie) Fielding in early 1948. (Eddie had been engaged to someone else before he went to war, but his fiancée broke it off before his return to Australia.) It was cared for by the Teagle/Fielding family for approximately one hundred years. This is an early 20th century musical composition by a leading Tasmanian composer, Florence Hull (Mrs Arthur Kenny). It is a sentimental song as the ‘sprig of boronia’ is a withered one, kept as a relic of some past event. This music was printed in the Victorian School Paper for Grades 7 and 8 in 1918 and the proceeds of copies of one of the editions of this work were donated to the Hawthorn Red Cross in Melbourne. Florence Hull’s musical works and memoirs are in the Tasmanian Archives. Paul Dufault, who sang this song, was a leading Canadian tenor who toured Australia and Europe. He died in 1930 aged 57. This sheet music has significance as it was composed by a Tasmanian woman in the early 20th century and it represents the type of music popular in concert halls at the time. It has been in the Warrnambool and District Historical Society collection for many years. This is a four page piece of sheet music (cover plus two pages of music). The paper is cream-coloured, discoloured in places, with brown print on the back of the cover and black notation on the music pages. The front cover is in brown, yellow and green tonings, with a chromolithographic illustration of a Boronia flower spray and some music bars. The back of the cover has information on eight of Florence Hull’s other compositions with comments by critics. The words for this song come from a Christmas song by Christina Rossetti. The poem was first published in 1885. The words have been set to music many times but the composer of this piece is James A. Steele, a well-known Australian music teacher and composer in the mid 20th century. This sheet music is retained as an interesting piece of music from the mid 20th century. As well, the owner of the music appears to have been Shirley Goldstraw, a descendant of the Goldstraw family that settled in the Naringal/Nullawarre area in the mid 19th century. This is a sheet of paper folded in two to make four pages. The pages contain the music for a song called ‘Love Came Down at Christmas’. The pages are torn at the edges with some small sections missing. The front page is stained. The inscription is handwritten in black ink. ‘S. The photograph shows the state of the Echuca wharf in 1973 or 1974. The P.S Pevensey looks like it has just received a fresh coat of paint. There is also a train parked on the wharf behind the school students. The river also appears to be quite high. This photograph shows the state of the wharf in the early 1970's. It shows the fence between the wharf and Murray Esplande was relatively new. The tourism industry was very new to Echuca in the 1970's but the P.S Pevensey looks ready to take Tourists cruising on the Murray River. A comprehensive thick catalogue book: D.W. Chandler General Hardware Ltd. Catalogue established 1876 which has a very decorative busy front cover with green, burgundy and cream colours for the title, full details of the contents, address, Registered Trademark, phone numbers and more. It is bound on the spine with red tape, 27.5 Inside on the left front end paper are details about Chandler's mail orders, a map of the Melbourne city location and addresses for Melbourne, Fitzroy and country cities. Opposite is a NOTICE page, explaining prices were current at the time of issue, (October 1937) with several altered prices since printing. Pp. 180 with four thin blue paper Order Forms at the back; two which have been filled in and two with a child's scribble on them. There is a comprehensive four page Index at the back. Hundreds of black and white drawings of hardware items and general life of the times are included throughout. Inserted in the catalogue are four dried plants or flowers, a small leaflet which shows illustrations and information about "Rega" spraying nozzles with diagrams and handwritten prices. A leaflet of a Parts Price List for Stewart No.1 Clipping machine and clipping heads. A copy of a D. W. Chandler Ltd Fitzroy order dated 12 March 1937 for "Ringlock" Fencing. On page 146 is a light blue thin paper Note for P146 about models of Churchill's and Jeffery's guns. Attached to this paper with cellotape is a typed copy dated 10/11/37 for an order for Square Iron Tanks to be delivered by rail. The back cover has advertising for "Perfect" Welded Fencing from Chandler's hardware stores.
