A relic of the battlefield, the Long Tan bayonet was collected on 19/08/1966 by 2nd Lt D R Sabben. He later presented it to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Masonic Lodge ( No. 921) at the South Eastern Masonic Centre in Keysborough, Victoria (now defunct) after they requested an artefact from the battle. In 2001, the SLR bayonet was mounted into a stone ashlar (cube) in the memory of National Serviceman Lt Gordon Sharp of 6th Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR) who died in the Battle of Long Tan, 18th August 1966, along with 17 other young Australian soldiers. The artefact was used in Masonic ceremonies held on Vietnam Veterans Day (August 18th) from 2001 until 2024, when it was presented to the National Vietnam Veterans Museum.White marble cube with bayonet in its scabbard fixed into the top of it. Photographic equipment belonging to Pte Garry David Martin (2793230) was a National Serviceman with the Royal Australian Infantry Corps and served in Vietnam with 1 Australian Reinforcement Unit in March 1970, 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment from April 1970 to May 1970 and the 7th Battalion from May 1970 to March 1971. In an unusual twist of fate, being in Vietnam gave many young Diggers the chance to own the most up-to-date technology, things they could neither get nor afford in Australia. The American PX (Post Exchange) operated like a duty-free department store, stocking everything from toiletries, stationery and snack foods to radios, cameras and small electrical appliances. As a result, servicemen routinely photographed and filmed their activities. Many captured their tours of duty with Kodak’s newest creation – the handheld Super 8 movie camera, released in April 1965. Families in Australia often received these films by post for developing at home. So, they saw exactly the conditions in which their relatives and friends were living and fighting. The image shows the Drum Major of the 6th Battalion, the Royal Melbourne Regiment between 1936-1960. He wears the uniform of the regiment which is similar to that of the Royal Fusiliers, with whom the 6th Battalion was affiliated. The Royal Melbourne Regiment was amalgamated into the Royal Victoria Regiment in 1960. RP5/6-00811-1 is the original coloured photograph printed on card (now fragile). Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries.
