The Yokohama Diving Company was established in the early 20th century. Their helmets were initially inspired by the english Siebe Gorman helmets which they manufactured in a smaller size. This also resulted in a smaller volume helmet allowing the divers to use less lead weights when diving. In the early nineteen sixties Yokohama became involved in manufacturing their own helmets but in a different design after american diving equipment manufacturer Robert Kirby had rebuilt several Yokohama helmets into a more practical / modern design. This bottle can be dated to the 1960's-1970's. Before this the bottles had a thick lip to accommodate a cardboard lid whilst this bottle would have had a foil lid. General use of milk bottles is usually associated with the 20th century , with occasional late 19th century. Initially, milk was delivered in cans stacked upright in a wagon. At each stop, someone, usually the wife of the house, would bring a pitcher or a pail to the wagon, and the milk man would ladle out the desired amount of milk. Needless to say, this practice was hazardous and unhealthy. The New York State Tuberculosis Association condemned the practice of selling “loose milk,” still being conducted in New York City in 1922, as a major cause for the spread of tuberculosis (Glass Container1922:8). It is probable that the delivery of milk in glass containers became universal shortly thereafter. Melbourne Glass Bottle Works Spotswood 1880 - 1990. made bottles for various companies. Milk cartons first came to Australia in 1958, when the Model Dairy in Melbourne began packaging milk in 150 ml and 500 ml cartons. At the time, 160,000 new glass bottles were needed in Melbourne alone every week to keep up the delivery of 1.3 million bottles of milk a day. In 1970, the blow-moulded disposable plastic milk bottle was introduced. In 1987, only about 2% of milk was still being sold in glass bottles. In 1947, the scientific instrument manufacturing firms of  Henry Hughes & Son Ltd, London, England, and  Kelvin Bottomley & Baird Ltd, Glasgow, Scotland, came together to form Kelvin & Hughes Ltd. Hughes Company History: Henry Hughes & Sons were founded in 1838 in London as a maker of chronographic and scientific instruments. The firm was incorporated as “Henry Hughes & Sons Ltd” in 1903. In 1923, the company produced its first recording echo sounder and in 1935 a controlling interest in the company was acquired by S Smith & Son Ltd resulting in the development and production of marine and aircraft instruments. Following the London office's destruction in the Blitz of 1941, a collaboration was entered into with Kelvin, Bottomley & Baird Ltd resulting in the establishing “Marine Instruments Ltd”. Following the formal amalgamation of Kelvin, Bottomley & Baird Ltd and Henry Hughes & Sons Ltd in 1947 to form Kelvin & Hughes Ltd. Marine Instruments Ltd then acted as regional agents in the UK for Kelvin & Hughes Ltd who were essentially now a part of Smith's Industries Ltd founded in 1944 and the successors of S. Smith & Son Ltd. Kelvin & Hughes Ltd went on to develop various marine radar and echo sounders supplying the Ministry of Transport, and later the Ministry of Defence. The firm was liquidated in 1966 but the name was continued as Kelvin Hughes, a division of the Smiths Group. In 2002, Kelvin Hughes continues to produce and develop marine instruments for commercial and military use. (See Note section this document for further information on the company's origins) This model binnacle and compass is a good example of the commercial diversity of navigational instruments made by Kelvin & Hughes after world war 2. It was made in numbers for use by shipping after the second world war and is not particularly rare or significant for its type. Also, it was made no earlier than 1947 as the firms of Kelvin, Bottomley & Baird Ltd and Henry Hughes & Sons Ltd who took over from Smith & Sons were not amalgamated until 1947. It can there for be assumed that this item was made during the company's transitional period to Kelvin & Hughes from Smith Industries Ltd.Mid 20th century ship's binnacle with Kelvin Hughes/ F. Fuselli Genova 8 inch diameter (glass) compass on gimballed ring. Round, teak wood pedestal with mounted brass compensating sphere brackets and painted iron balls one green the other red. Heavy brass helmet style compass cover with hinged front door and removable top for compass viewing and natural lighting. A single handle is located on the side and single burner on the opposite side. Retains an old finish and some wear to the pedestal base. Railway Platform Barrier Crowd control on railway platforms was a necessity during peak times. At times it may have been necessary to direct passengers to a certain exit or from a certain entrance on a railway platform. Where able, on occasions, two trains may have to use the one platform to ensure trains depart efficiently. To ensure the public entrain on the correct train it could be necessary to divide the platform by using a platform barrier. The barriers made of wood and steel were easily moved by platform staff and provided a substantial barrier on the railway platform. This book was originally written for private circulation among the Royal Family. It was written by Lieutenant-General Charles Grey (1804-1870) and was first published in 1867. It was commissioned by Queen Victoria. Grey had been secretary to both Albert and herself. Contents were sourced from letters and memoranda.This book was a significant contemporary record of the royal family. Originally Queen Victoria had attempted to record "an exact account" of hers and Albert's happy marriage but was unable to complete the project on her own. She commissioned Grey to compile it under her supervision, firstly for the royal family and then for public release. It was an outstanding sucess with many editions being necessary.A 469 page book which has green cloth board covers with gilt lettering on the spine and decorative gilt motifs on the front and rear boards. Compiled by Lieutenant - General Charles Grey, it details Prince Albert's life from his birth through to his wedding to Queen Victoria and the first year of their married life. on 4th page in - handwritten - "T. Part of a 43-photo record of the MMBW�s engineering feat in drilling a 12 inch pipe line up to 40 feet deep through rock hardened by volcanic action associated with geological fault that occurs along the line. The work took place from October 1979 to May 1980 on the southern boundary of Hubbard Reserve, North Ringwood.
