On June 26th an army of workmen gave their services for free, built the Methodist Church in Sherwood Avenue, Chelsea. A weatherboard building, 35 x 20 feet, with Gothic style amber white glass windows. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. The images held within the National Vietnam Veterans Museum make up the Gibbons Collection. A black and white photograph taken in the recreation building at the RAAF Base Vung Tau, Johnny O'Keefe and his rock and roll band perform a night show for RAAF Diggers. John Deason born 1829 on island of Tresco in the Scilly Isles. 1841 worked in Cornish tin mine. 1851 married Meg Davis, along with Richard Oates travelled to Bendigo Goldfields. By 1858 Meg and the four children were dead. John married Catherine McAndrew 28 October 1858. Left the Bendigo Goldfields for Bulldog Gully Moliagul. Joseph Harrison, born York UK 1810, convict sentenced seven years hard labour Van Diaeman's Land - Tasmania. Ticket of Leave August 1837. Arrived Williams Town (Port Phillip). 1840 worked as waterman. Married Margaret Barrett, relocated to Kilmore. Travelled to Bendigo Creek January 1853. By July 1853 had threatened to kill wife and eldest son William. Charged with attempted murder. He died 29 September 1854. Montsalvat Youth Photography Prize 2023 The Montsalvat Youth Photography Competition 2023 was opened to young people aged 14 - 18, based in Victoria. Entrants were invited to explore the grounds, buildings, people, and activities of Montsalvat – to capture its essence and bring their own imagination to the process. First Prize: $1000 sponsored by Future Leaders The winner’s work printed and framed by Montsalvat for display in the Barn Gallery for a three-week exhibition slot. Second Prize: $500 Ten artists were shortlisted and placed on rotational display on Montsalvat’s website and screened in the Barn Gallery for a three-week digital exhibition. In sponsorship with Eltham District Historical Society, the shortlisted works were also to be catalogued and preserved, providing a permanent display of work for young photographers.
