James Crawford Douglas was born in Ireland in 1842. He came to Australia in 1864 and married Mary Michael (1849-1921) in 1868. They settled at View Hill farm in Woodstock West where they had the following family:- Family tree records descendants of James and Mary Douglas. David Douglas (1799-1834) journeyed to the Pacific North-West as well as to other parts of the New World looking for new species of plants. The Royal Horticultural Society of London hoped to introduce new and exciting plants to its gardens.After Douglas's explorations in the New World, hundreds of new species became available. As a result flower beds and theme gardens with new exotic specimens and aboreta became fashionable.
