... jones a l...A. L. Jones ...In 1852 Stephen Charman purchased 160 acres bounded by Charman Rd and Balcombe Road in an area called Spring Grove , later Cheltenham. A spring ran through the land providing a good source of water. Stephen aged 21 years had arrived in Melbourne 1842 as one of Henry Dendy’s emigrants . His Ship passage was paid by the Colonial Land and Emigration Commission and in return he was required to work on the land of the Henry Dendy Special Survey Brighton 1841. However Henry Dendy could not provide enough work for all the emigrants that arrived and Stephen had to obtain other work. Then sadly his young wife Harriett and their infant died. 1850 Stephen married widow Mary Gettens, a Publican in Little Collins Street, with 5 children. Stephen & Mary built a wattle and daub hut and established a market garden producing marigolds for Martin & Pleasance Pharmacists, Melbourne. They had 7 more children and built a weatherboard cottage that was used for early Methodist Church services. Stephen donated 1 acre to the Methodist Church in 1855 for Chapel , School and Cemetery. This is the weatherboard cottage in the photocopy showing the building extension, The road between Cheltenham and Mentone bears their name. Mary died in 1870 and Stephen remarried 1878 and died in Gippsland 1906. Diana Jones (1939-2009) was President of the Association for the Blind from 1985 until 1992. In her 8 years as President a great deal was accomplished. New centres were opened or extended throughout Victoria and the Metropolitan area, volunteer services expanded and the Vision Resource Centre at Kooyong was built into which 3RPH radio was relocated. A Vision Information hotline, audiology services and the National Centre for Ageing and Sensory Loss were established, the Braille and Talking Book libraries was incorporated into the Association and the Charlie Bradley Cricket Pavilion opened at Kooyong. In 1990 Diana Jones became a member of the first Board of Directors of the newly incorporated Association for the Blind Ltd which ushered in a new era, requiring strict observance of financial and accounting methods in order to ensure continued Government funding. Mrs Jones was highly regarded by clients, volunteers and staff as a capable hard-working leader. Her services to the Association and over many years to the wider community, were recognised in her appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia in the 1993 Queen's Birthday Honours. Allan "Strad" Jones was born in Stawell but lived in Wodonga from the age of two years old. He worked with several companies before establishing Strad Jones Smash Repairs in Mulqueeney Street, Wodonga. He was a courageous football player and played for the Wodonga "Bulldogs" senior team from the age of 17 years. Allan initially played as full forward, then the centre and wing positions. He suffered a serious injury playing football whilst completing National Service at Puckapunyal and was hospitalised for 5 months. Mr. Jones returned to play for Wodonga and also coached Kergunyah and junior football teams in the 1960s. He also managed the Wodonga Little Athletics Club in the 1970s. Mr. Jones was an active member of the Wodonga Historical Society until his death in 2002. He worked not only to collect historical items but to ensure they were properly preserved and displayed. Two of his interests came together when he researched the history of Australian Rules football in the Ovens & Murray League and surrounding districts from its formative years through the 1940s. This publication was titled "Football - Glory Days Gone By".
