The Fashion, Textiles & Design Collection includes a number of examples of household or domestic textiles dating from the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries. Some had a purely functional role while others were essentially decorative. These textiles were mass-produced or handmade, and sometimes including elements of both. Many were constructed of, or include elements of, lacework, tatting, embroidery or crochet. This artwork was found among items associated with the Ballarat School of Mines. Although its purpose remains unknown, it was possibly painted by a staff member or student for use on Wattle Day. Wattle Day originated in October 1889 by the Wattle Blossom League, and was associated with the Australian Natives Association during the lead up to the Federation of Australian States. The first 'national' Wattle Day was celebrated on 1 September 1910. Early Wattle Days involved planting wattle trees in school grounds, street decorations of wattle blossom, and wearing sprigs of wattle. As public support for Wattle Day peaked, World War I broke out. Wattle took on a new significance during the war years, symbolising home for military personnel serving overseas. Beautifully designed Wattle Day badges, as well as wattle sprigs, were sold as a means of raising money for organisations such as the Red Cross. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The dress was made by Miss Mary Ryan, a pupil at Lilydale Convent (now Mt Lilydale College) in 1902. It was worn to the Annual Empire Day Celebrations in Lilydale. Accompanying photo shows dress worn by Monica Ryan (no. 5089). The outfit also includes two hand made pockets for handkerchiefs and ties (nos. 735 & 736) Empire Day Dress; Cream silk, cotton lined, embroidered with kangaroos and emu holding shield, with Southern Cross stars above rising sun emblem. Hugh Jeffrey attended the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music at Melbourne University, graduating in 1940. This examination pin was given to him in September 1934. It is a copper badge with its frame shaped like a shield. Inset into the shield is an Australian coat-of-arms granted by King George V, with a white and blue torse supported by a kangaroo and emu on a grassy field. It features the Commonwealth Star on top, and the motto "Advance Australia" underneath. Australia’s first silver sixpences were struck in sterling silver (92.5% silver, 7.5% copper) dated 1910 from the London Mint and don’t feature a mintmark. From 1916 to 1926, the Melbourne and Sydney mints were striking sixpences with dates between 1916-1920. From the estate of Elsie Cooke. Elsie Cooke lived all her life in Gippsland,. She was born at Brodribb in 1895 and died in 1970, Elsie Cooke lived at Bruthen for a short time and, in 1937, moved to live with her aunt, Miss Jean Munro. Miss Cooke was Librarian at the Mechanics Institute for many years. Kindness and consideration for other were Miss Cooke’s attributes and she endeared herself to all who knew her. She was a loyal member of the Presbyterian Church and a stalwart of the Ladies’ Guild, an energetic worker for the Municipal Auxiliary and a member of the Red Cross. (ref.
