The Peterborough Sandcastle competition has been running for at least 80 years. Wokka Moore was the first "Lady Mayoress", judge of the competition, who arrived with great ceremony using different means of transport over the years - always accompanied by a "Lady in Waiting". Traditionally, this was held on the Australia Day long weekend. Competition was divided into age groups, and the venue depended on whether the river was open or closed. (If it was open there is no sand on the Front Beach). Materials used could only be what was found on the beach. Currently (2021) the Sandcastle Committee is calling for photos, memorabilia and details of winners from over the years.This event has been running for a very long time , apparently uninterrupted. It is significant to the town because of its inclusive nature - there was high anticipation and planning by the children. The roles of Lady Mayoress and Lady in Waiting were keenly sought. Wokka Moore did the job for a long time then passed the baton. Zilles Printers was begun by Lewis Zilles in the early 1930s. It was in McKenzie Street Ballarat. His son Jeffrey also became a printer - letterpress, offset and screen printer. The business became Zilles Printers/Graphics and was in Armstrong Street and later Bell Street Ballarat. Ronaldson Bros and Tippett began in Creswick Road Ballarat 1905. They were manufacturers of agricultural machinery and oil engines. In the 1930s they began production of tractors. The company was taken over in 1970 and closed. Photo of Harry Tinson who was winemaker at Baileys in Glenrowan from 1968 until 1982. An ageing Alan Bailey (greatgrandson of founder Richard Bailey) sold the winery to Davis Consolidated Industries (mainly a gelatine producer). At the time Harry Tinson, with a Master’s degree in physical engineering, was in the corporate planning department of Davis. The board had decided it wished to diversify into wine production and Tinson was charged with the responsibility of finding a suitable target. He came up with Baileys, and was instructed to negotiate the purchase of a 50 per cent share in the business. Bailey said “all or nothing” ! These two pieces of ephemera look to have been done by Zaida King probably in a competition as stated on the back of both pieces. Little more is known about the artist or the competition This work has significance as some of the earliest work produced by a student at Warrnambool Technical School which was established in 1911. Artistically the work is also quite pleasing and well executed. The first Bendigo Easter Fair was held on April 10th and 11th 1871 and remains one of Australia’s longest running annual community events. Taking place over the Easter long weekend, the Bendigo Easter Fair features events throughout the City of Greater Bendigo and celebrations culminate in a parade through the streets on Easter Sunday. In 1892, large processional dragons became an integral part of the annual parade. The three principal golden dragons are Loong (1892–1970), Sun Loong (1970–2019) and Dai Gum Loong (2019–present), housed at the Golden Dragon Museum in Bendigo. The Bendigo Easter Fair Society is custodian of the Bendigo Easter Fair and continues to support the City of Greater Bendigo’s largest festival. Each year the City produces a poster to advertise the upcoming fair and this one from 2006 had the theme Boomba which may have been a play on the word Moomba, a Melbourne festival which takes place annually in March.
