These four formal photos of LTCOL Lionel ‘Bill’ Sprenger MBE, MID were taken at the Army Headquarters (AHQ) Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 30th of September 1969. LTCOL Bill Sprenger MBE, MID joined the Australian Army on the 10th of June 1940 and after rising through the ranks, his career culminated in his appointment as CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1969 to 1970. Despite suffering debilitating poor health during his appointment, LTCOL Sprenger MBE, MID led the Regiment on the unit’s first Freedom of Entry Parade held in Bendigo on the 14th of June 1970. For more information on this occasion, refer to item 6020.8P. Unfortunately, LTCOL Bill Sprenger MBE, MID passed away on the 5th of December 1970 and was farewelled with a full military funeral. He is remembered as a model of good leadership. COL Lawrence FitzGerald OBE was Director of the Survey Corps from 1942 to 1960 and was succeeded by COL Don Macdonald AM, MID. COL Frank Buckland OBE, MID succeeded BRIG Don Macdonald AM, MID as Director of the Survey Corps in 1967. He served as Director until 1972. BRIG Macdonald AM, MID was promoted before assuming the honorary position of Colonel Commandant of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. LTCOL Tim Tyler was the CO of the Army Headquarters (AHQ) Survey Regiment, Bendigo in 1962. MAJ John Nolan’s military career progressed to the rank of COL. He was the CO of the AHQ Survey Regiment, Bendigo from 1965 to 1969 and the Director of the Survey Corps from 1972 to 1975. CAPT Peter Constantine AM progressed in his career to the rank of LTCOL. This is a set of 11 photographs of Royal Australian Survey Corps personnel serving in WW2 taken in the early 1940s. It is not known where the photos were taken, however it is possible personnel in photos .5P to .11P were members of detachments from the 2/1st Corps Field Survey Coy RAE deployed to Morotai, an island in the Halmahera Islands, part of Indonesia. LT John Nolan’s military career progressed to the highest position in the Corps. He was the CO of Army Headquarters (AHQ) Survey Regiment, Bendigo from 1965 to 1969 and the Director of the Survey Corps from 1972 to 1975. GOC Southern Command MAJ GEN Robert William Knights CB, CBE formally presented the Defence Force Service Medal to personnel in recognition of 15 years of efficient remunerated service, or the Clasp for each further 5 year period of service. These eight photographs were most likely taken in the 1960s in Lithographic Squadron at the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. Although Photo .1P is not annotated the remainder have the name of the technicians written on the back. The equipment operated by the technicians is the KLIMCH Commodore camera. The main tasks undertaken by the technicians were most likely enlargements and reductions of map reproduction material. The KLIMSCH Commodore camera was introduced in 1953 and was the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. It was replaced with a new model of the same size in 1979. The new model with its computer-based interface provided productivity gains with improved speed and its consistent results led to less wastage in time and materials. Its variomat lens system provided improved retention of map feature linear weights during the camera reduction process. The typed description pasted on the back of photo .5P states “Cpl R. MacKenzie of Bentley, Perth (WA) of the AHQ Survey Regt, located at “Fortuna”, Bendigo, (Vic). Has been in the Army for 5 years. He removes the lens cap from the 70 inch F16 lens of the giant KLIMSCH camera used in map making for the Army. The camera which was specially made for the Army in Germany is fully automatic and power operated. It is claimed to be one of the biggest automatic cameras of its type in the world. It was made to the specifications of the Aust Army Survey Corps to assist in the production of the very high standard maps for the Army. The AHQ Survey Regt also assists Commonwealth and other Govt departments in the printing of maps required other than for Army needs. This is a copy of the Funeral Service (9 December 1970) for LtCol Lionel Bernard Sprenger MBE who died in service whilst he was the Commanding Officer of the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Bendigo. The Freedom of Entry to the City was an honour conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the AHQ Survey Regiment on the 20th of April 1970. The unit was granted for the first time the privilege of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. The Freedom of Entry Parade occurred on the 14th of June 1970 led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Bill Sprenger MID, MBE; the unit marched up View St in the CBD to the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The ceremonial parade followed with a march past the guests of honour, Mayor of Bendigo Councillor Clark Jeffrey and military dignitaries. The parade concluded after formal inspections of the troops. A ceremonial scroll was presented to the Bendigo City Council to the AHQ Survey Regiment citing the occasion and was proudly displayed in the entry foyer to Fortuna Villa up to October 2008. The Regiment continued to exercise its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980, 1985, 1992 and 1996. Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Bendigo. Public Inspection at 'Fortuna', 10 May 1964. Donation 2/-. Includes photos of the Entrance Hall, Music Room and Villa. 3 army photos. In 1942 the mansion was occupied by the Australian Survey Corps and 'Fortuna' became the site of the base map production plant of the Australian Army for the remainder of the war years. During this period approximately sixteen million maps of Australian Territories and theatres of operation in the South West Pacific Area, were produced for use by the Allied Services. This function was continued as a peace time role in the post war years, and in 1951 ''Fortuna'' was purchased by the Commonwealth Government. As the largest unit of the Royal Australian Survey Corps, AHQ Survey Regiment carries out mapping in all parts of the Commonwealth and Territories including Papua and New Guinea. The Regiment is not only capable of doing its own field surveys but is responsible for the drawing and printing of map compilations from Royal Australian Survey Corps units in all States. . . . Officer appointments to the Army Svy Regt were typically the CO, 2IC, Adjutant; and an OC, 2IC and Troop Officers assigned to the Headquarters, Topographic/Air Survey, Cartographic and Lithographic Squadrons. This is a set of 22 photographs of Army Headquarters (AHQ) Survey Regiment Officers Mess Formal Dinners held at Fortuna Villa, Bendigo in the late 1950s to mid 1960s. The dinners were held in the Ballroom next to the Officers Mess on the bottom floor of Fortuna Villa. These photos were taken on two occasions. The first occasion was in the late 1950s probably at the time of a Corps Conference. The second occasion was probably in circa 1961 to farewell LTCOL Lindsay Lockwood MID, who was the longest serving commanding officer in the history of the unit from 1951 to 1961. He was promoted to the rank of Colonel on retirement. COL Lawrence FitzGerald OBE was Director of the Survey Corps from 1942 to 1960 at was promoted to Brigadier on retirement. He was succeeded by COL Don Macdonald AM, MID who served as Director from 1960 to 1967). He was promoted to Brigadier when appointed to the honorary position of Colonel Commandant of the Royal Australian Survey Corps.
