E, Grave 66. mr albert george harbert mrs phoebe harbert ...Albert, the son of William Devereux Harbert and Anna Maria Gooch) was born in 1890. He died 15 June 1971 in Malvern. Phoebe Rebecca Georgina Colton (b 1889, Williamstown; d 31 August 1968), the daughter of Henry Culter Colton and Elizabeth Georgina Lucas. Albert and Phoebe were married in 1912 and moved into the house Albert had built at 237 Union Road. He bought the 60 foot frontage block for £60 in 1912 and built the home for £240. Albert built a number of homes in the locality and the shelter sheds at Chatham School. Phoebe had worked as a seamstress prior to marriage, earning 2/6d a week. They had 2 daughters Unice and Norma. Unice remained single. Norma married Henry Jamieson. They both lived to a good age and continued to live locally until frailty in old age caused them to move to nursing homes. Albert and Phoebe are buried in Boroondara Cemetery Spec E, Grave 66. A black and white screened photograph of a man and a woman. ... Major George Albert Eddy...". Major George Albert Eddy Photograph - black and white G ...George Eddy was born in Castlemaine (1860) and joined the Third Battalion of Militia at Ballarat in 1885. In 1890 he gained a position on the permanent staff of the Victorian Rangers and promoted to Major in 1897. Eddy went to England (1898-9) and was attached to the Devonshire Regiment. Major Eddy was killed at Rensburg, Province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa in 1900. He was Senior Officer of the First Contingent, commanding the Infantry Unit. Colonel Carter wrote..." ....I brought the gallant conduct of your husband and his command under the notice of the General .....He was a genial comrade and a gallant soldier, and he is, I fear, an irreparable loss to the Australian Contingent." Albert and his wife... for her second son (fifth child), Albert George Hone (b.1914 ...Knitted by the donor's grandmother, Elsie Hone. Knitted using bicycle spokes as knitting needles. Elsie Hone (nee Stone) was born in 1890 and died in 1987. She had six children and she apparently knitted this vest for her second son (fifth child), Albert George Hone (b.1914) for his 18th birthday. Albert and his wife Grace had four daughters between 1942 and 1951. The donor's mother, Ina Harriet Nilsson, was born in 1925 (fourth daughter, sixth child of Elsie) and as she had a son, the donor's uncle George (Albert?) passed it on to her. Both the donor's elder brothers wore and out-grew the vest and eventually it was passed on to the donor, Ray Nilsson. The vest was worn for many years while the donor worked at VACC Insurance Co Ltd in St Kilda Road, Melbourne and in the North Sydney, Canberra and Dandenong offices and it was a talking point as he recalled the story. The letter relates to the Albert Medal and George Cross. .2) One page typed letter dated 11 November 1983. The letter thanks John and Anne Tippett for their birthday wishes. It also mentions J.L. Cope and the role he played in Dick Richards recovery from severe physical collapse in August 1916. Richards writes 'he nursed by like a mother for a protracted period. ...' The letter ends with 'I ain't no bloody hero but I thought you would like to know. .3) One page typed letter dated 03 November 1984. It is a general letter which mentions Tony Gaze, Irvine Gaze. Irvine GAZE joined the RAF during World War One and was shot down near at luftwafer camp. A German airman saw Irvine Gaze's white polar ribbon and invited him to a meal where the President was Hermann Goering. Tony Zaze was a Spitfire pilot during World War 2 and was shot down about 100 miles from where his father was shot down.
