The photograph was taken at an Ithacan Philanthropic Society annual picnic held at Bacchus Marsh. The men picture are all wearing badges. People attending the picnics received a medallion shaped badge which they wore while at the picnic. Race officials also wore a special badge (with ribbon) to identify them. Nikolaos Paizis was known as 'the poet' (ο ποιητής) by the Melbourne's Ithacan community as he was renown for reciting nostalgic poems which he composed.
