This child's plate was owned by Elizabeth Morgan who was married to Mr P B Webb who was mayor of Warrnambool in 1917. A common item which has significance as it belonged to a local person who was Mayoress of Warrnambool Pale blue straight edged round baby's plate with wide flat rim. Transfer of lion in greenery surrounds is in centre of bottom of plate. Four small transfers of clowns around the edge of the larger transfer.. The alphabet and numbers 1-10 are around the flat edge of the plate. The side has a small ridge which has the remnants of gold paint. Slate has been used for hundreds of years as a base for writing and many young students began their schooling using one to practise their writing. They had many advantages among them the fact that they were reusable and errors could be erased and corrected. A small duster or cloth was often attached for cleaning. The Old School in Funtington (near Chichester, West Sussex) operated from 1839 until it closed as a primary school in 1967. The former schoolhouse and adjoining teacher's residence have since been beautifully restored into private properties and bed and breakfast accommodations. Established in 1839, the small village school provided elementary education for local children, including surrounding hamlets like East and West Ashling. The substantive part of the Westhampnett village school was built in 1839, paid for through the patronage of the fifth Duke of RIchmond and the Goodwood Estate. Its foundation was connected with a concern for social improvement at the time. The school provided for the basic educational requirements of local working families who were mainly in the employ of the Goodwood Estate, and orphans from the nearby Westhampnett Workhouse. The 41 alphabetic and numeric visual signalling flags (including substitute and answering pennants) have either square or pointed ends. They are made of bunting, a coarse fabric of worsted (open yarn wool) in various colour combinations. Some of the flags are marked with inscriptions, for example “B”. Attachments to the flags include hemp rope and metal clips. Each flag has its own galvanised canister and lid, each of which is painted grey and marked with a letter, number or word. The flags were used for communicating messages to passing ships. Knowledge of visual signalling was mandatory for all lightkeepers and all lightstations maintained a set of flags. Although used for centuries, visual flag signalling formally developed in the nineteenth century and was published internationally as a system in 1857. By the early twentieth century it had developed into an effective means of conveying all kinds of short range visual messages. The signal flags and canisters at Gabo Island form a complete set and are not historically linked to the lightstation and their provenance is unknown. It is known however that they originate from a lightstation in Victoria and for some years were on loan from AMSA to the Queenscliff Maritime Museum, where they were held in storage and not displayed. Lady Amies had a distinguished medical career. Born on 26 August 1906 at Delft, Holland, she was educated in Europe, and in Edinburgh where she qualified L.D.S.R.C.S. (1928); L.R.C.P., L.R.C.S. (1938). Prior to her marriage she had practised dentistry in Scotland and in Harley Street, London. After she came to Melbourne she established a medical practice and in 1946 became honorary medical officer in charge of the diabetic clinic at the (Royal) Children's Hospital.
