Covered ankle with 8 eyelets for thin brown laces. This leather piece is sewn onto the upper front leather piece. It has a cotton piece at the heel to enable the wearer to pull the boot onto the foot. It has a soft leather tongue. Woodend RSLWebbing Anklet (Gaiter), 1953
This anklet dates to 1953 and may be associated with the Korean War (1950-1953). This anklet web is an example of Australian military uniform dating back to the mid twentieth century. Olive drab woven webbing anklet. The anklet is made of a rectangular strip of fabric which is straight along one edge and curved to fit an ankle along the other side. Outside of anklet: two buckles are stitched on with straps of woven cloth, one placed near the top of the anklet, one near the base. The opposite end of the anklet has two black leather straps which may be attached to buckles when worn. Leather straps are stitched on with black thread. Inside of anklet: lower third has a cotton, olive drab lining. During the early stages of the Vietnam conflict, Australian troops wore this pattern of gaiters with Australian Army issued Ankle Boots (AB's) until they were replaced by the General Purpose (GP) boot.This type of gaiters were manufactured in Australia and used by the Australian Army from the mid 1940's until the late 1960's. Each gaiter has a pair of buckles and straps on the side and a buckle and leather strap at the bottom that is fitted under the sole of the boot.
