Instrument - Instagraph Camera, J. Lancaster & Sons, c. 1893
... Arapiles ...This type of camera was widely used from the 1880s to the early 20th century, particularly by portrait and landscape photographers. Bellows cameras were highly portable compared to earlier box cameras, making them ideal for field photography. They used glass plate negatives coated with light-sensitive emulsions, requiring long exposure times. Lancaster & Son of Birmingham was a well-known British manufacturer producing high-quality field and studio cameras. Most likely used by Horace WOOMLER of Natimuk to photograph life and events in the town between late 19th and early 20th centuries. This is a late 19th to early 20th-century large-format bellows camera, commonly used for plate photography. The camera consists of: A wooden box frame, likely made from mahogany or walnut, with brass fittings for stability and adjustment. A black accordion-style bellows, which extends and contracts to adjust the focal length. A brass lens with a focusing ring, housed in a wooden front panel, which moves forward and backward along a track system for focus control. A ground glass focusing screen at the back, where photographers would compose and focus the image before inserting a glass plate negative. Brass knobs, hinges, and fasteners, allowing for precise control of the camera’s focus, tilt, and positioning. A small nameplate on the top, identifying the manufacturer as Lancaster & Son, Birmingham, a well-known British camera maker. A lens cap is placed in front of the camera, indicating that this was a manual exposure camera, where the photographer would remove the cap to expose the plate. The nameplate at the top reads "LANDCASTER & Son, Birmingham", identifying the manufacturer.natimuk, arapiles, camera, film, photography, instagraph, horace woolmer, commercial item -

Newspaper - Ink Duplicator
Ink duplicators, also known as mimeograph machines, were widely used in the late 19th to mid-20th century for producing multiple copies of documents. They were commonly used in schools, offices, and small businesses before the advent of photocopiers. The process involved creating a stencil, which was then placed on an inked drum or roller. As the drum rotated, the ink was pressed through the stencil onto paper, allowing for mass reproduction of handwritten or typed documents. These machines were an essential tool for low-cost printing before modern printing technology became widespread. This particular ink duplicator is stored in a wooden case, suggesting it might be a portable model used in fieldwork, education, or administration. Given its worn condition, it has likely seen extensive use over time. Original Shire of Arapiles Ink Duplicator brought to Mail Times by Mrs LAURNECE of Woore-YallockThe item is a vintage ink duplicator, housed in a wooden storage box with metal clasps. The box is rectangular and appears to be made of solid hardwood, possibly beech or oak. The exterior shows signs of wear, with visible scuff marks, scratches, and discoloration, indicating prolonged use and age.ink duplicator, photocopier, newspaper, printing, commercial equipment -

Print (Item) - Steel Engraving, Nicholas Chevalier, Marysville, Victoria, 1874
An early steel engraving print of Marysville in Victoria. An early steel engraving print of Marysville in Victoria by Nicholas Chevalier. Nicholas Chevalier, born in 1828, was a Russian-born artist who worked in Australia and New Zealand. In 1851 Chevalier moved to London and worked as an illustrator in lithography and watercolour. After further studies in painting in Rome he arrived in Australia in December 1854. In August 1855 he obtained work as a cartoonist on the newly established Melbourne Punch. Later he did illustrative work for the Illustrated Australian News and also worked in chromolithography. He accompanied explorer/meteorologist Georg von Neumayer on trips to remote areas of Victoria, and the material gathered on such journeys resulted in some of his most recognised pieces of this period, including his painting of Mount Arapiles in Western Victoria. In 1864, when the National Gallery of Victoria was founded, an exhibition of works by Victorian artists was held. The government agreed to buy the best picture exhibited for £200. Chevalier's oil painting The Buffalo Ranges was selected, and was the first picture painted in Australia to be included in the Melbourne collection. In 1865 Chevalier visited New Zealand, travelling widely and doing much work there which was exhibited at Melbourne on his return. In 1869 he joined HMS Galatea as an artist with the Duke of Edinburgh, on the voyage to the East and back to London with stops in Tahiti, Hawaii, Japan, China, Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and India. The pictures painted during the voyage were exhibited at South Kensington. In January 1874 Chevalier was commissioned by Queen Victoria to travel to St Petersburg and paint a picture of the marriage of the Duke of Edinburgh. Chevalier made London his base and was a continual exhibitor at the Academy from 1871 to 1887. He had one picture in the 1895 Academy but had practically given up painting by then. Book - Prayer Book, Book of common prayer (Translated from German), 1891
This German prayer book is representative of the devotional items used by German-speaking Lutheran or Catholic communities, especially those that settled in Victoria's Wimmera region. It would have been used for private prayer, reflection, and possibly church services. The elegant design and portability suggest it may have been given as a confirmation or communion gift, and such books were often treasured family possessions. These items played a significant role in maintaining religious and cultural identity among German-Australian settlers in communities like Natimuk during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Belonged to Heinrich Wilhelm KLOWSS's mother Augusta Louie GLADIGAU. Book of Common Prayer.A small, leather-bound German-language prayer book, rectangular in shape with a dark, possibly black or deep brown cover. The front is adorned with a gold-embossed Christian cross centred within a double-lined decorative border, also in gold. The book is compact and was likely intended for personal use, suitable for carrying to church or for daily devotional reading. The spine appears to be slightly worn, suggesting long-term use and handling. Leather bound prayer book, inscribed, in German. Gold cross on front. 1891Gerang-Buch, Mrs G KLOWSS, Natimuk Lake - written inside the front cover.natimuk, natimuk lake, german prayer book, gladigau, klowss, mt arapiles, lutheran, bible, germany, migration
