This mug belonged to Emerald's first and much-loved GP and was significant for him. ...Dr Ian Stephen MacLeod Murphy (1905-1981) studied at Geelong College (1919-1922) and then Melbourne University (1929-1937). He practised briefly at Ballarat Hospital before enlisting in the Royal Australian Navy in 1939 and serving as a navy surgeon for the duration of World War II. He moved to Emerald in 1947 after running a successful medical practice in Hampton, with the intention of retiring and breeding turkeys. But Emerald and the surrounding districts had no doctor, so for the next 34 years, Dr. Murphy provided tireless medical care to the local community. Dr Murphy was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1977 for devotion to the health of the community. He died in 1981 at the age of 76 years and a Memorial Fund was set up in his name to provide support for local students studying Medicine. The Army Survey Regiment Wives Club was instrumental in establishing the Tennis Hut, featuring in photos .1P to .5P. ...This set of 16 photos of the Christmas Children’s Party were taken in the and the grounds of Fortuna, Army Survey Regiment in 1992. The Christmas party was an annual event enjoyed by the soldiers’ families, featuring amusements such as the ‘pig train’ and pony rides, a historic fire engine provided by the Golden Square Fire Brigade with Santa on board and refreshments such as cordial, lollies, ice creams and fairy floss. Single members readily volunteered to assist in the running of the party. An occasional highlight was displays of military hardware such as tanks and APC from the Puckapunyal’s Armoured Centre. Catering staff/contractors taking a break outside the kitchen are also featured in this collection. The Army Survey Regiment Wives Club was instrumental in establishing the Tennis Hut, featuring in photos .1P to .5P. The Wives Club initiated many social events. The P.C.S.A. may stand for Presbyterian & Congregational Sports Association, with the trophy being won by the Congregational Church team.
