Gifted to John / jack Yeoman who was a guard at Camp 13Camp 13Ashtray carved from sandstone, ( cream with dark pink stripes ), slightly triangle in shape, undulating surface. Heart shaped ashtray carved with a cigarette holder in one edge. Monkey is cream in colour, carved with holes to hold spare cigarettes. The scene also shows palm trees, local plants, a pyramid and a monkey. The edge of the dish is scalloped. The underside of the ashtray has been engraved indicating that it was a sports competition trophy. Several items were given by a seafarer, Mr Nicholas Garlick (1926-2009) into the care of Father Brady who retired from St Pauls Cathedral, Melbourne in 2018. Father Brady later donated the collection of; objects, documents and an extensive collection of cruise ship menus (1937-end of 20thC) to the Mission via the intermediary William Hastie, volunteer at the Mission for Seafarers.One of the reasons the gift has been accepted is because there are a number of items that relate to images or records of visits in the collection. This ash tray was given to a member of the Wodonga community by a veteran of World War 1 who served in the Royal Navy. The ashtray was made during "spare time" on board from discarded shell casings. The veteran, Howard Nation, came to Australia after the war and worked in several rural areas including Bairnsdale, Victoria.
