Domestic object - PS Hygeia commemorative ashtray

Historical information

This ashtray commemorates the PS Hygeia which was built in 1890, and saw service in Port Philip Bay. She was removed from service in 1931, and was sunk about 6 km outside of Port Phillip Heads.

Physical description

A rectangular brass ashtray depicting, in relief, the paddle steamer PS Hygeia. There is a groove in the bottom left hand corner for cigarette placement.

On back of ashtray: "PS Hygeia Scrapped 1931"
