Cash book of Gembrook Nurseries (Nobelius Nursery) years 1903 - 1951. The business was purchased by S and L Linton in 1955, but continued to operate under the name of CA Nobelius and Sons. Donated to the museum as a record of a major employer and historical figure of the area. The volumes were found by Clem Worrell in the basement of a shed on the former nursery site. Early volumes include records of personal as well as business expenses incurred by CA Nobelius. Also included are records of tree sales, names of employees and customer details. The cash account books are historically, and socially significant as the entries give an insight into the growth of the company and the details payments from local and other government offices and overseas customers as well as significant companies associations and people. The earlier account books also detail wage payments. Notes associated with this photograph indicate both that it was taken at the end of Heroes Avenue and that it was taken on 'Monbulk Road' - while these notes might simply be incorrect, it may also indicate that this may have been taken at what is now the intersection of Heroes Avenue and either Beaconsfield-Emerald Road or Kilvington Drive, potentially at the time under a different or incorrect name. This photograph was taken in 1898 when Emerald was much less densely occupied as a growing town amidst Nobelius' nursery.This photograph captures a side of Emerald that no longer exists, looking at the growing town from an outside that has long since been encompassed by the town.A black and white photograph of a landscape, with various buildings in the background and the road in the foreground. Allwood at Hurstbridge was named and first settled in 1837 by the Haley family. A house was built of one round of vertical slabs (red gum). Later it was the Hurst family home where Henry Hurst was shot by Burke the Bushranger on 4 October 1886. George Gray took over the property and the original home was eventually demolished. Gray, a fruit grower established an orchard and Allwood Nurseries which became a very successful business growing and exporting. This is probably around the time when this photo was taken where rows of fruit trees can be seen in the foreground. A house and associated buildings, possibly part of the nursery are behind. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' John McNaughton studied at the Ballarat Teachers' College in 1929. This style of milk bottle began to appear in Australia in the 1930s. The number stamped on the base indicated the dairy to which the bottle belonged. Nursery milk had a higher guaranteed fat content than ordinary milk. Lady Talbot, the wife of a Victorian Governor, was associated with the movement that was to become the Free Kindergarten Union in 1908. The Talbot Milk Institute was associated with the Union. It provided free uncontaminated milk to needy families, since many infant deaths and illnesses were traceable to unsuitable or adulterated food. A wide necked milk bottle made of clear glass. Embossed in an arc on the front of the bottle: 'Lady Talbot Milk Supply Co. Specially supervised nursery milk.' Also embossed on base: '62'.infant feeding

Sections of a longer nursery wallpaper roll purchased from a Melbourne retailer in the 1850s. The wallpaper depicts figures in an imaginary rural landscape. The central repeated image in this painterly design is a woman seated on a chair with a child playing at her feet. Farm animals include a white duck, a hen and a rooster. Other elements of the imaginative, playful design include a church, a Greek temple and a cart wheel.
